In addition to writing several novels and books about the outdoors, he wrote outdoor editorials for The New York Times for more than 30 years, from 1941 to 1978. Early life and education Hal Borland was born on the plains in Sterling, Nebraska . His family moved to Colorado, where he grew up. After attending local schools, he studied at the University of Colorado at Boulder University of Colorado . He studied journalism and graduated from Columbia University . Career Borland started writing as a journalist for publications such as the Denver Post , The New York Times , and Audubon Magazine . From 1941 1978, he wrote what he called outdoor editorials for the New York Times . In 1945 he and his wife moved to a 100 acre farm in Connecticut, and lived and worked there. She was also a writer. He published several collections of his nature writing, in addition to novels and other non fiction books. Bruce Borland November 4, 1958 &ndash October 25, 1999 was a golf course designer who worked for Jack Nicklaus . He died in the 1999 South Dakota Learjet crash on October 25, 1999 while traveling with golf Hall of Fame r Payne Stewart . Biography Bruce Borland was raised in the Peoria, Illinois area. He took a fascination with golf at an early age, building and maintaining a putting green in his parents backyard, tending to it tediously. Borland went on to graduate from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign , with a degree in Landscape Architecture , then moved to the Chicago area and began designing golf courses for several firms. In 1989, Borland opened his own design firm, ProDesign , just a year later he was offered a design position with Jack Nicklaus at Golden Bear International . Borland worked on many of the famous Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses, as well as other stateside and Indonesian courses. In 1999, Borland was killed in a 1999 South Dakota Learjet crash crash of a Learjet flying from Orlando, Florida to Dallas, Texas while flying with Payne Stewart to The TOUR Championship. Edward Franklin Grant Borland III , 1925 , more commonly known as Jiggs by his family and friends, was born of Canadian parents in Reading, Pennsylvania and migrated to Canada with his parents at the age of 10. He volunteered for the Canadian army at the age of 17. From here he would attend jump school in Manitoba but did not finish due to an injury. From here he moved onto tanker school in Borden, Ontario . Once he had completed this portion of his training he was assigned to 14th Canadian Hussars. Once in England a number of the armored units were asked to assign a number of its members to a new unit known as the 8th Reconnaissance Squadron, better known as the Canadian 8th Recce. Jiggs role within the unit was to be a main gunner, radio operator and secondary driver. In a letter from French President, Jacques Chirac in 2005, it was stated that he has been chosen to receive the Legion of Honor . This medal is France s version of the Victoria Cross or the Congressional Medal of Honor . The honor has been bestowed upon Mr. Borland for his saving of the French town of Dieppe, Seine Maritime Dieppe , Seine Maritime from a planned Allied Command air raid.
