It is a sheet bronze covering of a now vanished wooden shield decorated in La T ne style . The shield is on display in the British Museum , while a replica is housed in the Museum of London . History The Battersea Shield probably dates from the 1st century BC or early 1st century AD, though an earlier date is possible, and dates from as early as 350 BC have been suggested. It was dredged from the bed of the River Thames in London in 1857, during excavations for the predecessor of Chelsea Bridge in the same area workers found large quantities of Roman military personal equipment Roman and Celtic warfare Celtic weapons and skeletons in the riverbed, leading many historians to conclude that the area was the site ... invasion of Britain . 1. Lantern shield

A lantern shield is a very unusual weapon shield design that was used in Italy between the 16th and 17th centuries. Both for attack and defense, there were enough tools embedded in the design that some might call it an Italian Swiss army shield . Born of the need to protect one s self from the increasingly frequent night time robbery mugging s, it was based around a small metal buckler some 30  cm in diameter. The buckler was affixed to the wearer by a small strap to the forearm a metal Gauntlet gloves gauntlet was also built into the far end of the shield and affixed with some long serrated spikes to help catch and break enemy blades. Citation needed date July 2010 Beneath this odd complex of shield and spiked glove was a long sword blade, which paralleled the wearer s arm. It extended in front of the shield by some 30  cm and behind the shield to the wearer s elbow, and was pointed for thrusting. On the face of the shield a short spike was affixed to be used for short jabs. The center also held a hook arrangement, so that the lantern that gives this weapon its name could be carried. The lantern was fitted with a flap that could be used to hide the light. During this period in Italy fencers sometimes carried lanterns to dazzle their foes training schools in the use of such tactics existed. The idea was that on being attacked, the user would flip the lantern open and blind the opponent in the dark of night. Citation needed date July 2010 It is believed that the Lantern Shield was more of a deterrent to would be robbers than an actual, effective, defensive option. 1. Shield boss

Image Langobard Shield Boss 7th Century.jpg right thumb 250px A Lombards Lombard shield boss from northern Italy, 7th century Metropolitan Museum of Art A shield boss , or umbo , is a round, wikt convex convex or conical piece of material at the centre of a shield . Shield bosses or sometimes, just bosses are usually made of thick metal but could also be made of wood. The boss was originally designed to deflect blows from the centre of round shields, though they also provided a place to mount the shield s grip. As time went on and heater shield s with curved bodies became more popular, and enarmes superseded the bar grip, the boss became more of an ornamental piece. Often, bosses are not present on non circular shields due to the differences in technique with a round shield, one makes a Punch strike punch ing motion towards an oncoming blow, while with a heater or kite shield, attacks are blocked by pivoting the shield about the body. A boss provides a significant advantage for deflecting blows when using a punching motion, but is not very effective when using a pivot to block an attack. Manufacture In medieval times, shield bosses were made by armourers out of sheets of iron or steel. The armourer started with a flat, relatively thin sheet and Sinking metalworking sank the metal into a bowl, which might then be planishing planished and polishing buffed . 1. Whipple shield

No footnotes date April 2009 Image WhippleShield.jpg thumb right Whipple shield used on NASA s Stardust spacecraft Stardust probe The Whipple shield or Whipple bumper , invented by Fred Whipple , is a type of hypervelocity impact shield used to protect manned and unmanned spacecraft from collisions with micrometeoroid s and orbital debris whose velocities generally range between convert 3 and 18 km s . As opposed to monolithic shielding of early spacecraft, Whipple shields consist of a relatively thin outer bumper placed a certain distance off of the wall of the spacecraft. This improves the shielding to mass ratio, critical for spaceflight components, but also increases the thickness of the spacecraft walls, which is not ideal for fitting spacecraft into launch vehicle fairings. The advantage of a bumper placed at a standoff over a single thick shield is that the bumper wall can shock the incoming particle and cause it to disintegrate. This spreads out the impulse particle over a larger area of the inner wall of the spacecraft. There are several variations on the simple Whipple shield. Multi shock shields , like the one used on the Stardust spacecraft Stardust spacecraft, use multiple bumpers spaced apart to increase the shield s ability to protect the spacecraft. Whipple shields that have a filling in between the rigid layers of the shield are called Stuffed Whipple shields . The filling in these shields is usually a high strength material like Kevlar or Nextel. The type of shield along with the material, thickness and distance between layers are varied to produce a shield with minimal mass that will also minimize the probability of penetration. There are over 100 shield configurations on the International Space Station alone, with higher risk areas having better shielding.
