Image Selectivecolor flag.JPG thumb right 210px Artistic use of selectivecolor on a flag. Selectivecolor is a post processing technique where most of a photo is converted to black and white, but some parts are left in color. This is usually achieved by using layers and masks in photo editing software Photoshop , SilverFast , Adobe Fireworks or The GIMP for example . A common application for selectivecolor is Portrait photography portraiture , to keep the eyes and sometimes the lips in color, against an otherwise black and white photograph. Small regions of color in an otherwise monochrome image immediately draw the viewer s eye. Landscape photography is another common application for this technique. Colorful leaves in an otherwise drab scene can breathe life into a photo. Of course the technique can be applied to any genre, but portraits and landscapes are the usual beneficiaries. The clear differentiation between colors of the original color image can get lost in an automatic conversion process, because the resultant grey shades may be adjacent. In magazines and newspapers this often results in grey images, which do not have very detailed shades. SilverFast s SC2G feature SelectiveColor to Grey can maintain the grey shade differentiation by controlling the conversion process. For all six colors red, green, blue, cyan, magenta and yellow the user can control into what shade of grey the color will be converted. Interactive monitoring of the whole conversion process assures resulting grey images as desired. Films such as Schindler s List and Sin City film Sin City have made use of the technique. gene responsible for the yellow endosperm color, shows strong evidence for a selective sweep in yellow ...A selective sweep is the reduction or elimination of genetic variation variation among the nucleotide s in neighbouring DNA of a mutation as the result of recent and strong positive natural selection . A selective sweep can occur when a new mutation occurs that increases the Fitness biology fitness of the carrier relative to other members of the population . Natural selection will favour individuals that have a higher fitness and with time the newly mutated variant allele will increase in frequency relative to other alleles. As its prevalence increases, neutral and nearly neutral genetic variation linked to the new mutation will also become more prevalent. This phenomenon is called genetic hitchhiking . A strong selective sweep results in a region of the genome where the positively selected haplotype the mutated allele and its neighbours is essentially the only one that exists in the population, resulting in a large reduction of the total genetic variation in that chromosome region. Detecting selective sweeps Whether or not a selective sweep has occurred can be investigated in various ways. One method is to measure linkage disequilibrium , i.e., whether a given haplotype is overrepresented in the population. Under neutral evolution, genetic recombination will result in the reshuffling of the different alleles within a haplotype, and no single haplotype will dominate the population. In solar thermal collector s, a selective surface is a means of increasing its operation temperature and or efficiency. The selectivity is defined as the ratio of radiation absorption electromagnetic radiation absorption alpha to radiation Emission electromagnetic radiation emission epsilon . Materials that exhibit this combination of characteristics do not, however, exist in nature. Selective surfaces take advantage of the differing wavelengths of incident solar radiation and the emissive radiation from the absorbing surface. Normally, a combination of materials is used. One of the first selective surfaces investigated was simply copper with a layer of black cupric oxide . Black chromium black chrome nickel plated copper is another selective surface that is very durable, highly resistant to humidity or oxidizing atmospheres and extreme temperature s while being able to retain its selective properties but expensive. Another combination consists of steel plated with gold , silicon , and silicon dioxide . Although ordinary black paint has high absorption, it also has high emissivity, and thus its selectivity is low. So it is not considered to be a true selective surface . Typical values for a selective surface might be 0.90 absorption and 0.10 emissivity. but can range from 0.8 0.3 for paints on metal to 0.96 0.05 for commercial surfaces and emissivities as low as 0.02 have been obtained in laboratories. Selective fading or frequency selective fading is a radio propagation anomaly caused by partial cancellation of a radio Signalling telecommunication signal by itself &mdash the signal arrives at the receiver by Multipath propagation two different paths , and at least one of the paths is changing lengthening or shortening . This typically happens in the early evening or early morning as the various layers in the ionosphere move, separate, and combine. The two paths can both be skywave or one be groundwave . Selective fading manifests as a slow, cyclic disturbance the cancellation effect, or null , is deepest at one particular frequency, which changes constantly, sweeping through the received Sound audio . The effect can be counteracted by applying some diversity scheme , for example OFDM with subcarrier interleaving and forward error correction , or by using two receiver radio receivers with separate antenna radio antenna s spaced a quarter wavelength apart, or a specially designed diversity reception diversity receiver with two antennas. Such a receiver continuously compares the signals arriving at the two antennas and presents the better signal. Unreferenced date December 2009 Selective disclosure is a situation when a publicly traded company discloses material information to a single person, or a limited group of people or investors, as opposed to disclosing the information to all investors at the same time. Material information is roughly defined as information that would cause a reasonable investor to make a buy or sell decision. A problem with selective disclosure that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission SEC sought to eliminate with Regulation Fair Disclosure a.k.a Regulation FD or Reg FD , is that it creates an uneven playing field for investors, allowing some investors to profit from material market moving information before others. Possible example of selective disclosure 1. A company insider tells a small group of Wall Street analysts that the company is going to beat current analyst consensus estimates for earnings per share. If this is the first time the company disclosed such guidance, and the guidance wasn t simultaneously disseminated to all investors via a press release or publicized webcast, then the disclosure would consistitute selective disclosure. unreferenced date December 2008 Selective enforcement is the ability that executors of the law such as police officers or administrative agencies, in some cases have to arbitrarily select choice individuals as being outside of the law. The use of enforcement discretion in an arbitrary way is referred to as selective enforcement or selective prosecution . Historically, selective enforcement is recognized as a sign of tyranny, and an abuse of power, because it violates rule of law , allowing men to apply justice only when they choose. Aside from this being inherently unjust, it almost inevitably must lead to favoritism and extortion, with those empowered to choose being able to help their friends, take bribes, and threaten those they desire favors from. Allowing bad doctors to injure again and again or otherwise turning a blind eye on medical corruption, especially for criminal wrongdoing on the basis of having to live in the same community are examples. Each province or state investigates and disciplines doctors differently. The authorities are guilty of selective enforcement and of refusing to adequately investigate and prosecute physicians. Selective enforcement sets a bad precedent. Self regulation may predispose. However, the converse can also be true. Police officer discretion is sometimes warranted for minor offenses, for instance where a warning to a teenager could be quite effective without putting the teen through a legal process which also reduces costs of governmental legal resources. Another example is patrol officers parked on the side of a highway for speed enforcement. It may be impractical and cost prohibitive to ticket everyone who is going any amount over the speed limit, so the officer should watch for the more egregious cases and those drivers who are showing signs of driving recklessly. Selective reduction or fetal reduction is the practice of reducing the number of fetus es in a multifetal pregnancy those involving more than one fetus . This procedure is often performed after a congenital defect has been identified. Prenatal diagnostic testing may determine that some fetuses have chromosomal defects or a greater chance of genetic disease s, and those fetus es are then targeted in selective reduction. Selective reduction is also used to reduce a higher order multiple pregnancy one with three or more fetuses to a twin or singleton pregnancy. This is done to avoid the medical issues generally related to multiple births, including premature birth s, low birth weight s, and associated medical problems. Selective reduction can also be used to reduce a twin pregnancy to a singleton one, but this is less common as the risks in twin pregnancies, while existent, are much lower than in higher order multiple pregnancies. Image Selective reabsorption3.JPG thumb right 200px A diagram to show the process of selective reabsorption. Selective reabsorption takes place in the proximal tubule proximal convoluted tubule PCT of the kidney. It is the process by which useful substances within the glomerular filtrate such as glucose, amino acids, vitamins and water are taken back into the blood after ultrafiltration . As only certain substances are reabsorbed, it is known as selective reabsorption. A basic outline of the process of selective reabsorption The co transport pump actively transports sodium out of the PCT wall using energy from converting ATP to ADP Pi to maintain a low Na concentration gradient in the wall. This low concentration gradient means that Na ions from the glomerulus filtrate can easily passively diffuse into the wall of the PCT. However the Na ions cannot diffuse freely across the membrane, but can only enter through special transporter carrier proteins in the membrane of the wall. There are several different kinds of these transporter proteins, each of which transports another molecule, such as glucose or amino acids. The concentration gradient for the sodium provides the energy to pull in these other molecules into the wall of the PCT. As the substances listed above Na ions, amino acids and glucose enter the wall of the PCT, so does 65 70 of the water in the glomerulus filtrate via osmosis. Water can move freely through the wall of the PCT it does not require a transporter protein. Nearly all the rest of the water is reabsorbed into the blood in the Loop of Henle and the Collecting duct system . However as urea is a small molecule it can pass easily through the membrane of the PCT wall. As the concentration of urea in the filtrate is significantly higher than in the blood, around 50 of urea on the filtrate is reabsorbed. Unreferenced date December 2009 essay date January 2011 Selective recruitment is an observed effect in traffic safety . When safety belt laws are passed, belt wearing rates increase, but casualties decline by smaller percentages than estimated in a simple calculation. This is because those converted from non use to use are not recruited random members of the driving population. Instead, users differ from non users in many ways that influence safety. Two effects are 1. When non wearers crash, they have more severe crashes. 2. Non wearers are more likely to crash Illustrative example of effect Say initial belt use was zero it never is, but this assumption makes it easy to understand , and after a belt law is passed use rate increases to 50 . As belts reduce driver fatality risk in crashes by 42 , a naive calculation would lead one to expect a 21 reduction in fatalities. In fact, a lesser reduction is observed. A somewhat complicated equation p.  293 of Traffic Safety book estimates expected fatality reductions when use rates increase from any initial percent to any new percent. For the case of an increase in belt use from zero to 50 , the calculated reduction in deaths is 16 , well below the 21 estimated from the naive calculation. Diminishes effectiveness of belt wearing laws So even when belt wearing rates reach 90 , the 10 who do not wear have substantially more crashes, and more severe crashes, than the overall population. The 10 of non wearers thus make a far larger contribution to the overall casualty toll than might appear likely if selective recruitment did not occur. Hardly unexpected Belt wearers have been shown in more than a dozen good studies to behave differently from non wearers. The phenomenon is in many ways obvious and to be expected.
