Unreferenced date January 2008 National Qualifications NQs are qualifications studied in Secondary schools and Colleges of Further Education in Scotland . There are three types of National Qualification Standard Grades, National Courses and National Units. Standard Grades Standard Grades are mainly studied over two years during the third and fourth years of secondary schooling. There are three level in Standard Grade Credit, General and Foundation with Credit passes normally being required before pupils can expect to have a reasonable prospect at success if they decide to study at Higher level in that subject the following year. National Courses and Units National Courses were originally introduced as the step following on from Standard Grade and were offered at Higher level, but also at lower levels than Higher to allow further opportunities for pupils to progress. Immediately below Higher level is Intermediate 2 which is broadly the level of Credit at Standard Grade below that Intermediate 1 which is broadly the level of General at Standard Grade below that Access 3 which is broadly the level of Foundation at Standard Grade, and below that Access 2 and Access 1 for those pupils who found Foundation level too much of a challenge. Free standing Mathematics Qualifications FSMQ are a suite of mathematical qualifications available at levels 1 to 3 in the National Qualifications Framework Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. They bridge a gap between GCSE and GCE Advanced Level AS Level Mathematics and are especially ideal for pupils who have taken their Maths GCSE a year early. The examining boards currently offering FSMQs are OCR examination board OCR and Assessment and Qualifications Alliance AQA . Edexcel withdrew the qualification, the last exam being held in June 2004. An FSMQ Unit at Advanced level is a rough equivalent of an AS or A level module, whilst the Intermediate level is equivalent to a GCSE in Mathematics. The Qualifications and Credit Framework QCF is a new system of recognising and comparing different skills and qualifications in the Education in UK UK education sector . The QCF replaces the NQF National Qualifications Framework NQF which closed for accreditations at the end of 2010. Every unit and qualification in the new framework has a Credit education credit value where one credit represents 10 hours of learning time . There are three different sizes of qualification awards 1 to 12 credits certificates 13 to 36 credits diplomas 37 credits or more . In addition, each qualification has a level of difficulty from Entry level at the bottom to Level 8 at the top. The title of every qualification within the new framework contains details of the size award certificate diploma , level of difficulty Entry to Level 8 and general content of the qualification.
