Unreferenced date February 2007 The Scottish National Dictionary Association SNDA was founded in 1929 to foster and encourage the Scots language, in particular by producing a standard dictionary of modern Scots. This primary aim was fulfilled in 1976 with the completion of the 10 volume Scottish National Dictionary SND , covering the language from 1700 to 1976. Material for SND is drawn from a wide variety of written and oral sources of Lowland Scots from Shetland to Ulster. SND was produced under the editorial direction of William Grant from 1929 1946 , and of David Murison from 1946 1976 . After the Scottish National Dictionary was completed, with its Supplement, in 1976, the Association went on to produce a wide range of smaller Scots dictionaries, including the Concise Scots Dictionary 1985 and a Scots Thesaurus 1990 . The Association also established an ongoing Word Collection in order to create a constantly updated resource on modern Scots. In 2002, when the related Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue Project reached completion, a new organisation, Scottish Language Dictionaries SLD was formed to further Scottish lexicography. PoliticsScotland The Scottish Covenant Association was a non partisan political organisation in Scotland in the 1940s and 1950s seeking to establish a devolved Scottish Assembly . It was formed by John MacCormick who had left the Scottish National Party in 1942 when they decided to support all out Scottish independence independence for Scotland rather than devolution as had been their position. MacCormick took many supporters with him, and set up the Scottish Union , which later became the Scottish Convention before eventually evolving into the Scottish Covenant Association. The name Covenant was a direct reference to the Solemn League and Covenant signed by the Scottish Covenanters of the 16th and 17th centuries. The Covenant Association played an enormous part in mobilising Scottish public opinion in favour of devolution , with over two million signatures in favour of such being gathered between 1949 and 1950 through the Scottish Covenant . ref http news.bbc.co.uk 1 hi events scotland 99 the scottish parliament 306850.stm Devolution s swings and roundabouts BBC News 7 April, 1999 ref Ultimately though the Association s disengagement from the conventional political process meant that this enthusiasm waned and had no outlet, with it being some 50 years before devolution was secured for Scotland. Perhaps the greatest coup of the Covenant Association was the removal of the Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey by four of their members Ian Hamilton QC Ian Hamilton , Kay Matheson , Gavin Vernon and Alan Stuart over Christmas in 1950. The Scottish Youth Hostels Association SYHA , founded in 1931, is part of Hostelling International and provides youth hostel accommodation in Scotland . It claims over 30,000 current members, and is used by many visitors from outwith Scotland. The principal objective of the Association is To help all, but especially young people, to experience and appreciate the Scottish countryside and places of historic and cultural interest in Scotland, and to promote their health, recreation and education, particularly by providing low cost accommodation for them on their travels. The current handbook lists nearly 70 hostels some independently owned such as those of the Gatliff Hebridean Hostel Trust . Hostels vary from modern purpose built premises to historic buildings and country cottages, sited in major towns and cities and in rural locations, including remote islands. The atmosphere varies greatly from one hostel to another, affected as it is by factors such as the location from the Highlands and Islands to the bustle of Edinburgh , and the personality of the warden. Lodging Accommodation is generally dormitory style but increasingly this is being subdivided into smaller units. For example, the most modern hostel, Edinburgh Central, has many single and twin bedded rooms with ensuite facilities. All have a lounge sitting room, shared bathrooms and self catering kitchens. A few large hostels provide meals. The Scottish Touch Association or STA is the national body set up to promote and develop the sport of Touch also known as Touch Rugby in Scotland . It is in turn administered by the Federation of International Touch FIT . The 2011 World Cup is to be hosted in Edinburgh . History Touch has been played in Scotland since 1991 in informal leagues in Edinburgh and Glasgow . The sport soon spread to Aberdeen with a well established league forming soon afterwards. At Heriot Watt University , two Sport Science Students, John Houston and Nick Grier, organized an Inter University Touch Tournament. Originally taking place in the 3rd term 03, the first winners of The Lopez Cup came through the group stages unbeaten and won the final convincingly. From humble beginnings of only 8 teams the tournament is now a yearly success with 32 teams registering. In 2005 the Scottish Touch Association STA was formally constituted as the governing body to help develop the sport. By 2007 the association had welcomed new participants from Dundee , Perth, Scotland Perth and Stirling to join existing leagues, held its first formal national championships, trained over 150 referees and won the tender to host the 2011 World Cup in Edinburgh.
