History The church s origins date to 1188 when Ginevra Gradenigo, a Venetian noblewoman forced to became a nun by his father, donated to abbess Giacomina Boncio a land to built there a monastery. Demolished, rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1529, the church was then united to the monastery of SantaMaria di Piave in Lovadina , in the province of Treviso , which enriched the building. It was raised to the status of basilica by Pope Pius XII . Architecture Interior The basilica is 100 metres long by 20 metres wide. It has the form of a Latin cross but the transepts do not project beyond the aisles. The shallow apse is five segments of an octagon, as is common in Italian Gothic churches. It was designed in the Gothic architecture Gothic style with pointed arches throughout. At the death of Padre Andrea in 1396, the work was not complete. Orphan date February 2009 Francesco DegliAngeli or Angelis Sorrento , 1567 &ndash Colela , Ethiopia, 21 October 1628 was an Italian Jesuit missionary to Ethiopia. Life He entered the Society of Jesus in 1583. After two years 1602 04 spent in the mission of the Indies, he travelled to Ethiopia, where they called him the man who was always cheerful . Angeli stood high in the favour of two successive Kings of Ethiopia. He made converts, among them the brother of the King and lords of the court, but did not succeed bringing about the reunion of the Abyssinian Church with the Roman Catholic Church , because of opposition from Ethiopian monks. For five years Angeli preached the Gospel among the Agazi , where he founded a church and school. Works He translated many religious works into the language of the Agazi. The most important of them was the commentary of Maldonatus on the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke. First built in 1575, the church was completely rebuilt by Ferdinando Fuga in 1733 using an elliptical plan. Inside may be seen frescoes of St. Anthony Abbot and St. Paul of Thebes by Giovanni Lanfranco these were removed and transferred to this church from a now lost structure built by Odoardo Farnese .
