It was nicknamed the General s Hat Island by China Chinese seamen hundreds of years ago. It is located about 20 nautical miles 37 km southeast of Mersing , on the east coast of Johor. The journey by boat to Tinggi Island takes approximately 45 minutes. The interior of the island is mostly covered with secondary lowland Dipterocarp rainforest. Japanese occupation During the Japanese occupation, the school was used as a shelter for sisters and orphans from Taiping and Singapore .
