  1. S4C Digital Networks

SDN S4C Digital Networks is a company that operates multiplexer Multiplex A, one of the six groups of channels on digital terrestrial television in the United Kingdom . Despite its name, the company is now owned by ITV plc . History When digital terrestrial television was first launched in the UK, it was decided that Multiplex A must carry Five TV Channel 5 nationally, S4C in Wales and TeleG in Scotland. The right to operate the multiplex and therefore the rest of the space was to be given to the highest bidder. S4C who were already guaranteed their gifted space on the multiplex , United News and Media and NTL set up S4C Digital Networks each owned one third of the company and bid for the right to operate Multiplex A. In the event, they were the only bidder and, after having their business plan approved, were awarded the licence to operate Multiplex A by the Independent Television Commission in 1997. Before their licence became active, the name of the company was changed from S4C Digital Networks to SDN ref http onhistory.mattaustin.co.uk GOlink ?linkid 113&category 04 ONhistory Timeline ref . Upon the activation of the licence in 1998, SDN began broadcasting Multiplex A in 64 QAM mode at 24 megabits second which allows many channels to broadcast, though makes it more difficult to get a good signal . They rented out their capacity to various free and subscription channels though S4C did keep their gifted space in Wales to launch S4C2 . After the launch of Freeview UK Freeview to replace ITV Digital , the free services carried on Multiplex A became effectively part of Freeview. As SDN was not a member of the Freeview consortium, they were technically not part of the service though they were available to all Freeview viewers . In 2004, Top Up TV launched on Multiplex A, though it sub let its capacity from Five, and not SDN directly. Multiplexes A and 2 were the only options ... 1. Sbectel

Sbectel IPA cy sp kt l is the name of S4C s former ancillary teletext service. It was named after the Welsh language S4C programme magazine called Sbec Welsh for peek which was originally a pull out of the TV Times in the HTV ITV Wales area. Content Sbectel provides listings and information about S4C s programmes, such as previews of programmes and further information related to the programmes. Pages are provided in both Welsh language Welsh and English language English . The service is separate from the auxiliary and separately licensed teletext service also available on the channel. Sbectel also provides subtitles for S4C s programmes on page 888 in English and page 889 in Welsh. History Future Sbectel was first run in conjunction with ORACLE teletext ORACLE , the auxiliary teletext provider on Channel 4, in the 1980s. Sbectel occupied pages 410 499 within the page space. In 2003, Sbectel moved to pages 400 499 which replaced pages 300 399 as S4C s page space . This was due to Channel 4 the equivalent of S4C in the United Kingdom outside Wales closing their Sbectel equivalent, FourText formerly 4 Tel , and launching a new teletext service in conjunction with Teletext Ltd, Teletext on 4 , on pages 400 499. 1. ETP-1

Image ETP 1.jpg thumb right 175px ETP 1 ETP 1 or Electronic Test Pattern One was a test card designed and used by the Independent Broadcasting Authority IBA . After test transmissions from the IBA s Engineering Regional Operations Centre ROC in Croydon from 1978 it was phased in on ITV over a period starting from 1979 , replacing Test Card F . After ITV went 24 hours in 1988 , the card ceased to be seen on the channel. It was also seen extensively on both Channel 4 and S4C during both the pre launch tests and during the downtime of those channels, due to their limited hours early on. After launch, it was alternated with in vision teletext services from ORACLE teletext ORACLE and 4 Tel Sbectel . On these channels, it was captioned either IBA CH4 or IBA S4C, with lines above and below this indicating the card was being generated by the channel, the absence of these lines meant it was generated at the transmitter. After the splitting up of the IBA in 1990 , the captioning was changed to Arqiva NTL CH4 NTL S4C. ETP 1 was last broadcast on December 31, 1992 after which Channel 4 showed 4 Tel on View and gradually increased its late night programming eventually going 24 hours a day in 1997 .
