Biography He was a native of G ttingen , the son of educator Heinrich Friedrich Theodor Kohlrausch . He was successively teacher of mathematics and physics at L neburg , Rinteln , Cassell , and Marburg, and a professor at the Universities of University of Marburg Marburg and University of Erlangen Erlangen . Research In 1854 Kohlrausch introduced the Dielectric relaxation relaxation phenomena , and used the stretched exponential function to explain relaxation effects of a discharging Leyden jar . In 1856 with Wilhelm Eduard Weber Wilhelm Weber 1804 1891 he demonstrated that the ratio of electrostatic to Electromagnetism electromagnetic units produced a number that matched the value of the then known speed of light . This finding led to Maxwell s equations Maxwell s conjecture that light wave light is an electromagnetic wave . Also, the first usage of the letter c to denote the speed of light was in an 1856 paper by Kohlrausch and Weber. Family He was the father of physicist Friedrich Kohlrausch . Rudolf Schwarzkogler 13 November 1940 in Vienna &ndash 20 June 1969 was an Austrian performance artist closely associated with the Viennese Actionism group that included artists G nter Brus , Otto M hl , and Hermann Nitsch . He is best known today for photographs depicting his series of closely controlled Aktionen featuring such iconography as a dead fish, a dead chicken, bare light bulbs, colored liquids, bound objects, and a man wrapped in gauze. The enduring themes of Schwarzkogler s works involved experience of pain and mutilation, often in an incongruous clinical context, such as 3rd Aktion 1965 in which a patient s head swathed in bandages is being pierced by what appears to be a corkscrew, producing a bloodstain under the bandages. They reflect a message of despair at the disappointments and hurtfulness of the world. Unreferenced date December 2009 Rudolf Nebel March 21, 1894 September 18, 1978 was a spaceflight advocate active in Germany s amateur rocket group, the Verein f r Raumschiffahrt VfR Spaceflight Society in the 1930s and in rebuilding German rocketry following World War II . Nebel was born in Wei enburg in Bayern Wei enburg and trained as an engineer. He was an early member of the VfR and assisted with Hermann Oberth s failed publicity stunt on behalf of the group to launch a rocket at the premiere of Fritz Lang s film Frau im Mond Woman in the Moon . Nebel acted very much as the group s spokesperson, organising the donation of materials from various local businesses, and negotiating with the Berlin municipal council for the use of a disused ammunition dump for the VfR s launchsite or Raketenflugplatz . He later talked the Magdeburg council into funding the launch of a rocket with a human passenger on board, a scheme that never materialised. He opposed the militarisation of rocketry, and rejected the opportunity to join the army s rocket team under Walter Dornberger Captain Walter Dornberger that was taken up by Wernher von Braun and Klaus Riedel . Von Braun later tried again during the war to have him join, but by now the SS regarded him as untrustworthy and had von Braun cease his attempts. After World War II , Nebel was quick to encourage Germany to recommence rocket research. He participated in the first meetings of the International Astronautical Federation and held a public lecture in Cuxhaven in 1951 that set in motion a chain of events that led to the old military base being re opened for rocket launching until the mid 1960s.
