Born in Niagara Falls and educated at the University of Toronto , Weaver served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II. From 1948 to 1985, RobertWeaver worked at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation CBC where he created a series of shows that identified and featured then unknown Canadian writers such as Alice Munro , Mordecai Richler , Timothy Findley , Margaret Atwood , and Leonard Cohen . In 1956 Weaver founded the Tamarack Review , a Canadian literary magazine. Over the course of his career at the CBC, Weaver edited more than a dozen anthologies and initiated the annual CBC Literary Awards in 1979. He declined the Order of Canada , stating he was critical of the three tier nature of the award. ref cite web url http archives.cbc.ca on this day 01 02 title Writers champion RobertWeaver dies Did You Know? publisher CBC Archives accessdate ... RobertWeaver July 5, 1924 September 4, 1994 was an American illustrator who was considered the pioneer of a contemporary approach to the field that began in the 1950s. Beginning in 1952, he embarked on a mission to combine the visual ideas found in fine art with the responsibility of journalist. At the time, most practitioners of illustration were expected to paint and draw for advertising and magazine assignments with artwork that was conservative, idealized and saccharine. Rarely was the artist called upon to inject their own opinion into the matter. Weaver reacted by moving his role of an illustrator from a page decorator to a journalist. He ventured from the typical haven of an illustrator s studio into the world and used a pencil to observe, record facts, and draw real life based visual essays. This approach would later be termed visual journalism and in 1983 would form the basis of a special masters degree, Illustration as Visual Essay, from the School of Visual Arts in New York. ref Smith, Roberta. http query.nytimes.com gst fullpage.html?res 9801E6DF1F38F93AA3575AC0A962958260 RobertWeaver, 70, Painterly Illustrator And Noted Teacher , The New York Times , September 9, 1994 ... f findaid findaid idx?c mghl cc mghl view reslist subview standard didno mghl00003.xml RobertWeaver ... of reality.
