Biography He was born in Adair County, Kentucky Adair County , Kentucky on December 16, 1821. He moved with his parents to Henry County, Tennessee and a few years later moved to Obion County, Tennessee Obion County . He attended the public schools of Troy, Tennessee Troy and Lebanon, Tennessee Lebanon , studied law at Troy, was admitted to the bar association bar , and commenced practice in Trenton, Tennessee Trenton in 1845. Robert Caldwell served in the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1847 and 1848. He was a member of the Tennessee Senate in 1855 and 1856. He was elected attorney general for the sixteenth judicial circuit of Tennessee in 1858. During the American Civil War Civil War , he was a major in the Twelfth Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, of the Confederate Army . He was elected as a Democratic Party United States Democrat to the Forty second United States Congress Forty second Congress , but was not a successful candidate for re election to the Forty third United States Congress Forty third Congress . He served from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873. He resumed the practice of law in Trenton, Tennessee. He died in Trenton on March 12, 1885. He was burial interred in Oakland Cemetery. In 1942 he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard University . Starting at Ford Motor Company Ford in 1953, he successively headed truck operations, the Philco division, and international operations in the last of these positions he introduced the Ford Fiesta into Europe . Following the firing of Lee Iacocca in 1978, Caldwell became president of Ford Motor Company Ford . On October 1, 1979, Henry Ford II retired as Chief Executive Officer CEO and as Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1980 Caldwell succeeded him in each position.     Dr. Edwin Caldwell August 12, 1867 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina 1932 www.ibiblio.org cemetery segregated discovered one of the first effective treatments for pellagra . His grandparents were slaves. His father was Wilson Caldwell and his mother was Susan Kirby. The grandparents on his mother s side were Robert Warren and his wife, who both died in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The grandfather on his father s side was known as Doctor November. He was the servant of Dr. Joseph Caldwell, the first president of the University. When Edwin Caldwell was young, he helped clean chemistry labs at the University where his father worked. He was described as a very bright boy, who was liked very much by the students at the University. He received his education at a free public school as a child in North Carolina. He also received private lessons as a child from students at the university, including a man called Hon. Lock Craig, who ended up becoming governor of the North Carolina. When he grew up, he went to Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and graduated from the medical department in 1890. Being a black man, his odds of success were low, but he pulled through and received his medical degree. From there he went on to practice medicine at Charlotte, North Carolina. From there, he went on to pass the examination of the Arkansas State Medical Board in 1892, and then practiced for seventeen years in Osceola, Arkansas. He was elected a member of the American Association of Progressive Medicine and the Medical Society of the United States. He moved to Durham, North Carolina, and in November 1918, he married the widow of E. B. Caldwell, his brother. Her maiden name was Miss Minnie Stroud. Minnie Stroud was his sister in law, who was raising 11 children when Edwin married her. Edwin Caldwell moved in with her to help take care of the children, and decided to marry her.
