The Advanced Video Attribute Terminal Assembler and Recreator AVATAR protocol is a system of escape sequence s occasionally used on Bulletin Board System s BBSes . It has largely the same functionality as the more popular ANSI escape code s, but has the advantage that the escape sequences are much shorter. AVATAR can thus render colored text and ASCII art artwork much faster over slow connections. The protocol is defined by FidoNet technical standard proposal FSC 0025. Avatar was later extended by in late 1989 to AVT 0 sometimes referred to as AVT 0 which included facilities to scroll areas of the screen useful for split screen chat, or full screen mail writing programs , as well as more advanced pattern compression. Avatar was originally implemented in the Opus BBS, but later popularised by RemoteAccess . RemoteAccess came with a utility, AVTCONV that allowed for easy translation of ANSI documents into Avatar helping its adoption. pcmicro was a large Bulletin Board System BBS support site from 1981 to 1998. Before the World Wide Web became popular, the pcmicro BBS served as a central file repository for all non commercial BBS software and related utilities. The BBS was a FidoNet nenber from 1991 1997, and was a support and distribution site for several shareware and freeware BBS packages including RemoteAccess , Proboard, and EleBBS. pcmicro later released a telnet communications driver named NetFoss which allows DOS based BBS software to be used over telnet. While the BBS is no longer in service today its entire collection of freeware and shareware BBS software and utilities can be found on the BBS Archives at http archives.thebbs.org. At a time where BBS Software such as RemoteAccess were merely using ANSI art interfaces RoboBOARD started a revolution. It was the first fully graphical BBS system with iconic navigation, punchy bitmaps, and vector fonts, all at a time when ultra fast high speed modems were barely clocking 2400 bps. RoboBOARD FX provided a familiar looking graphical user interface for DOS, complete with dragging windows, clicking buttons, scrollbars, pop up dialogue boxes and templates. In this GUI environment RoboBOARD FX supported graphics modes of up to 1024 x 768 in 16 256 SVGA color. One of the biggest improvements RoboBOARD FX brought into the BBS world was it built in photographic capabilities, which allowed a BBS to display images to its users in real time, without requiring a pre download. SPITFIRE BBS is a DOS based Bulletin Board System written by Mike Woltz, published by his company Buffalo Creek Software of West Des Moines, Iowa. SPITFIRE was written in Turbo Pascal with Assembly Language routines. It was released in 1987 under the Shareware concept and had a moderate sized fanbase, only outnumbered by products such as RemoteAccess , TriBBS , PCBoard , Major BBS , and Wildcat BBS . It was possible to run multiple nodes of SPITFIRE under Microsoft Windows and OS 2 although, most SysOp s preferred to use Quarterdeck s DESQview for this purpose. SPITFIRE interfaced with message relaying systems such as FidoNet through 3rd party utilities such as SHILOH, a QWK networking interfacing program, and BCSUTI, a Postlink style networking interface. SPITFIRE s most successful release Version 3.2 came in 1992, just before the World Wide Web exploded on the scene. By 1994, many SysOps began converting from running BBSes to becoming Internet Service Provider s. Mr. Woltz was greatly admired by loyal SysOps, but was known for being somewhat stubborn and due to his unwillingness to add Internet connectivity to the software. SPITFIRE s usage dwindled significantly throughout the United States. It was and is still used throughout the world, particularly in countries where high speed Internet access is unavailable or banned. However, due to advances in technology, SPITFIRE can be run as a telnet BBS by using a virtual FOSSIL driver and TELNET telnet engine SIO VMODEM under OS 2 , NetFoss , NetSerial or NetModem under Microsoft Windows Windows . SPITFIRE version 3.6 was updated in 1999 for Y2K compliance. Current release is SPITFIRE 3.7 as of 1 January 2010 which is still supported by Buffalo Creek Software today. orphan date December 2009 Terminate terminat.exe was a shareware modem Terminal emulator terminal and Bulletin board system host program for MS DOS and compatible operating systems developed from the early to the late 1990s by the Denmark Dane Bo Bendtsen. The last release 5.00 was made in 1997 no details are available for the first, but the T Cfg program which performed config upgrades from 1.0 to 1.1 is dated 1994, so it seems reasonable to assume 1.0 was not that much earlier. Compared to similar programs of its time, Terminate had a large number of built in features like a powerful contact list phone book with long distance calling cost calculation, FidoNet Fido Mailer , QWK file format QWK offline mail reader , Orthodox file manager file manager , text editor, keyboard mapping, ISDN support http www.blkbox.com bgfax echo MSG 1286.HTM , fax and voice call features, chat, IEMSI , VGA mode detection, audio CD player, and a REXX like scripting language. Supported terminal emulation modes included ASCII , Advanced Video Attribute Terminal Assembler and Recreator Avatar , ANSI escape code ANSI , Remote imaging protocol RIP , VT100 VT102 , and others. A number of file transfer protocols like Zmodem were built into the application, along with support for external protocols like HS Link and BiModem . The built in support for advanced file transfer protocols made Terminate very popular at the time. The installation program could import the phone book and settings from other applications like Telix , RemoteAccess , Frontdoor , BinkleyTerm , Portal of Power , as well as indirectly Minicom and Commo Terminal Emulator Commo . Unreferenced date June 2007 cleanup date March 2008 A dropfile is a simple binary or text file used by a bulletin board system BBS to pass information about the BBS itself and the current user to an external BBS door . Formats Many different dropfile formats exist most of these are application specific. While there was never a standard dropfile, there were several formats that were commonly used. However, little documentation has survived for most of them. General formats are known, but specific values for certain fields or meanings for the actual fields have been lost with time. tt DOOR32.SYS tt br Created by Maarten Bekers, author of EleBBS , and James Coyle, author of Mystic BBS , this dropfile is able to handle TELNET connections created by newer BBS software EleBBS, Mystic BBS, Synchronet and by certain older BBS applications mostly OS 2 native Maximus BBS Maximus , Telegard , AdeptXBBS . tt DOOR.SYS tt br This format originated in the GAP BBS application and quickly became a de facto standard. The original tt DOOR.SYS tt contained 52 lines. Nearly all modern BBS applications support this format. tt TRIBBS.SYS tt br Created by Mark Goodwin, original author of the TriBBS Bulletin Board System. tt DORINFO1.DEF tt br RBBS PC used this format exclusively. This file is 13 lines long. The name of the dropfile never changed, even if it was used in multi node environments. Citation needed date June 2007 tt DORINFO .DEF tt br Used by RemoteAccess , this allowed slightly more flexibility for up to 36 nodes. The dropfiles for nodes 1 9 are named DORINFO1.DEF to DORINFO9.DEF. Node 10 uses DOFINFO0.def. Nodes 11 36 use alphabetical order, from DORINFOA.DEF to DORINFOZ.DEF. Citation needed date June 2007 This is exactly the same format as tt DORINFO1.DEF tt . tt CHAIN.TXT tt br This was used by WWIV BBS and contains 32 lines. tt CALLINFO.BBS tt tt SFDOORS.DAT tt br Spitfire BBS created this dropfile. tt PCBOARD.SYS tt br This binary dropfile was created and used by PCBoard , ... more details
