He and his crew sighted islands Gunnbj rn s skerries lying close off the coast of Greenland , and reported this find. Gunnbj rn did not land. Greenland is physically and culturally part of North America it is separated from Ellesmere Island by only a narrow strait, so this constitutes the first definitively established European contact with North America. The exact date of this event is not recorded in the sagas. However, because of illness problems, he had to leave the post for then deputy county mayor Nils Helgheim before even chairing a single council meeting. He was elected to the Storting Norwegian Parliament from Bergen in 1958, but was not re elected. He had previously served as a deputy representative during the term 1954&ndash 1957, and later served in the same position from 1961&ndash 1965. On the local level Andersen was a member of Bergen city council from 1954 to 1959. Andersen spent his entire career as a ship mechanic, and was active in the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions . All our knowledge about her come from this source and it reads as follows There was a powerful high born man in Sweden called Steinkel. His mother was Astrid, the daughter of Njal Finnson the Squinter from H logaland Halogaland , and his father was Rognvald the Old. Her husband Ragnvald is usually identified with Ragnvald Ulfsson , the earl of Staraya Ladoga . This identification must however be regarded as guesswork since it is not supported by any other source. The Icelandic sagas mention a wife and two sons to Ragnvald Ulfsson but none are identical with Stenkil or his mother Astrid.
