In 1942, a worsening of Socioeconomics socioeconomic conditions nationally aggravated interracial tensions. Racial animosity and friction during the Jim Crow laws Jim Crow era were not unusual, but wartime conditions made matters worse. The 1969 York RaceRiot refers to a period of racial unrest in York, Pennsylvania in 1969. big History big In 1963, black citizens of York, Pennsylvania protested police violence and discrimation at City Hall. Their demands for a bi racial police review board were turned down by the all white city council. Protesters would occasionally be clubbed by police or the police would sick thier german shepherds on the crowd. The city had several notorious white gangs such as Roosevelt Park Inc., the Newberry Street Boys, the Swampers, and the Girarders. By the mid 60s, York had become a war zone, divided by race. On July 17, 1969, York City Police Detective George Smith stopped Taka Nii Sweeney, 17, and his friends for violating the city s youth curfew. During the encounter Seeney was shot by an unseen gunman possibly a white gang member White and black gangs began rumbles that afternoon. Fights broke out, buildings were set ablaze and police began barricading black neighborhoods. More than 60 people were injured, 100 were arrested and entire city blocks burned. On July 18, white York City Police officer Henry C. Schaad was shot and killed while responding to another shooting. Officer Schaad was in an armored car. The suspect s bullet pierced the armor and Officer Schaad was struck in the chest. He was a rookie officer with 11 months on the force.
