Meir Auerbach 1815 1877 was appointed by Rabbi Shmuel Salant for a number of years as the Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Jerusalem . Biography Born in Kowel , Poland, into the Auerbach Jewish family Auerbach family of rabbis, he became rabbi of his hometown at the age of 25. In 1846, Auerbach was appointed president of the Jewish beth din beit din in Ko o , where he served for nine years. Later he moved to Kalisz , where he served as a rabbi and engaged in commerce. In his sermons, he encouraged members of his congregation to immigrate to Eretz Yisrael , to start the process of redemption. In 1858, Aurbach traveled to the Holy Land and settled in Jerusalem. His position in Poland was filled by Rabbi Chaim Elozor Wax . In Jerusalem, Auerbach found many kollel s, each working for the benefit of their own communities. Rekhavi is the Chancellor of the Karaite Jewish University and a founding member of the University which was created in November 2005. In July 2007 Rekhavi served on the Beth Din Jewish religious court of the Karaite Jews of America that performed the first conversions of Gentiles to Karaite Judaism since 1465 . Meir ben Todros HaLevi Abulafia c. 1170 &ndash 1244, Burgos , Spain , also known as the Ramah Hebrew an acronym of his Hebrew language Hebrew name , was a major Sephardic Talmudist and Halachic authority in medieval Spain. Meir Halevi Abulafia is pronounced mey er ha lay vee a bool a fia . He was the scion of a wealthy and scholarly family, the son of Todros ben Judah , to whom the physician Judah ben Isaac dedicated his poem, The Conflict of Wisdom and Wealth, published in 1214. In his thirties he was already one of the three appointed rabbis on the Toledo, Spain Toledo Beth Din one of the other two was Joseph ibn Migash s son, Meir .
