History The first such trust set up was for the benefit of a rabbi , resulting in the name. Revenue Procedure 92 64 further clarified the acceptable rules for Rabbi trusts along with a model trust document and the required features to avoid constructive receipt of income to the employee. Applications An example of a Rabbi trust applying where an employee receives compensation the taxation of which is deferrable is a nonqualified deferred compensation plan. The Rabbi trust is likewise applicable when one business purchases another business but wants to set aside part of the purchase price and defer its payment as well as taxability to the payee upon the satisfaction of conditions to which both parties agree. 1. Rabbi Nehemiah

Eras of the Halakha Rabbi Nehemiah was an Israelite , circa AD 150 during the Tannaim era . He is attributed as the author of the Mishnat ha Middot ca. AD 150 , making it the earliest known Hebrew text on geometry , although other historians assign to a later period by an unknown author. The Mishnat ha Middot argues against the common belief that the Bible defines the geometry geometric ratio pi as being exactly equal to 3, based on the description in 1 Kings 7 23 and 2 Chronicles 4 2 of the great bowl situated outside the Temple in Jerusalem Temple of Jerusalem as having a diameter of 10 cubit s and a circumference of 30 cubits. He maintained that the diameter of the bowl was measured from the outside brim, while the circumference was measured along the inner brim, which with a brim that is one hand length handbreadth wide as described in 1 Kings 7 24 and 2 Chronicles 4 3 yields a ratio from the circular rim closer to the actual value of . ref Petr Beckmann , A History of Pi , St. Martin s 1971 . ref See also History of numerical approximations of Notes references Tannaim rabbi stub DEFAULTSORT Nehemiah, Rabbi Category Mishnah rabbis Category 2nd century rabbis Category Ancient mathematicians Category Mathematics writers he ...   more details

  1. Case (rabbi)

orphan date May 2010 Case was one of the foremost Poles Polish rabbis and Talmudists of the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth died at Pozna Posen about 1610. His name, Case or Kaza is most probably only a variant of the well known surname Cases. This would argue for Italian descent but it does not agree with the fact that Case called himself Shapiro, as Bloch has conclusively proved. After serving as chief rabbi of Lemberg , Case became city rabbi of Posen, while Mordecai ben Abraham Jafe was the district rabbi of Greater Poland. Although Case apparently left no writings, he was one of the first Talmudic authorities of his time, as may be seen from Benjamin Aaron Solnik s responsum No. 22, and Me r ben Gedaliah of Lublin s responsum No. 88. Case s son Solomon died January 2, 1612, at Lemberg was also an eminent Talmudist. Eras of the Halakha Rabbi Nathan Hebrew was a tannaim tanna from the Land of Israel of the third generation 2nd century , the son of a Jews of Babylonia Babylonian exilarch. For unknown reasons he left Babylonia , and his bright prospects there, to settle in the land of Israel , where he was made chief of the school at Usha Hor. 13b H. Gr tz , Gesch. iv.185 . Later he was entrusted by the patriarch R. Simon ben Gamaliel III to secure a reconciliation with R. Hananiah of Babylon , who had declared himself independent of the Sanhedrin of Judea and had established one in Babylon a mission which Nathan, in company with R. Isaac, successfully executed Gr tz, l.c. pp. 188 et seq. . According to I. Halevy in Dorot ha Rishonim, p. 185 , however, both Nathan and Isaac were still residents of Babylon. Controversy Soon afterward dissensions occurred between Nathan and R. Me r , on the one side, and the president, R. Simon , on the other, owing to an attempt by the latter to abolish the equality hitherto existing among all members of the school, by restricting the tokens of esteem shown by the community to other members of the school lower in distinction than the president. 1. Rabbi Josiah

Eras of the Halakha Rabbi Josiah Hebrew was a Tannaim Tanna of the 2nd century, the most distinguished pupil of R. Ishmael . He is not mentioned in the Mishnah , perhaps because he lived in the south Sanh. 88b , and his teachings were consequently unknown to the compiler of the Mishnah, Judah ha Nasi , who lived at Tiberias and Beth she arim in northern Land of Israel Israel . This is the explanation proposed by Z. Frankel and N. Br ll but the fact may have been that the Mishnah of R. Me r , which served as the basis of Rebbi s Mishnah, did not accept the development of the teachings of Ishmael as formulated by Josiah and R. Jonathan , and they were consequently omitted by Rebbi from his Mishnah D. Hoffmann , in Berliner s Magazin, 1884, pp. 20 et seq. . Josiah is frequently mentioned in the Mekilta together with Jonathan. All their differences concerned only interpretations of Biblical passages, never halakot . During Hadrian s persecution Josiah seems to have fled from Israel, for he was at Nisibis , where he delivered precepts in the college of Judah ben Bathyra Sifre , Num. 123 ib. Deut. 218 . He stood out with his many questions, many of which that were left unanswered. His exceptional questions gained publicity, and some use the phrase a Jeremiah questions to refer to rare or out of the ordinary questions. After he was taken out of the Beth midrash , the prominent sgaes of the generation sent him Halakhah ic questions, and his answers made them decide to return him back to the Beth midrash . 1. Rabbi Jonathan

Eras of the Halakha Rabbi Jonathan Hebrew was a Tannaim Tanna of the 2nd century and schoolfellow of R. Josiah , apart from whom he is rarely quoted. Jonathan is generally so cited without further designation but there is ample reason for identifying him with the less frequently occurring Jonathan ben Joseph Jonathan or Nathan b. Joseph or Jose comp. Mek. , Yitro, Ba odesh, 10, with Sifre , Deut. 32 Mek., Ki Tissa, 1, with Yoma 85b Tosef. , Niddah, ii. 2, Ket. 60b, and Yer. So ah vii. 19c . Life and Teachings In consequence of the Hadrian ic religious persecutions he determined to emigrate from land of Israel Israel , and with several other scholars started on a journey to foreign parts. But his patriotism and innate love for the Holy Land would not permit him to remain abroad Sifre , Deut. 80 . Jonathan and Josiah were educated together at the academy of Ishmael ben Elisha Men. 57b , whose dialectic system, as opposed to that of Akiva Akiba , they acquired. It is even reported that Jonathan all but converted Ben Azzai , a fellow student of Akiba, to Ishmael s system, and made him deeply regret his failure to study it more closely. Ben Azzai then exclaimed, Woe is me that I have not waited on Ishmael ul. 70b et seq. . Nevertheless, in later years, probably after Ishmael s death, both Jonathan and Josiah adopted some of Akiba s principles. Of Jonathan it is expressly stated that he followed the system of his teacher Akiba Yer. Ma as. v. 51d .
