Mergeto Lithosphere Oceanic lithosphere date July 2009 Oceanic lithosphere Oceanic lithosphere is typically about 50 100 km thick but beneath the mid ocean ridges is no thicker than the crust , while the continental lithosphere has a range in thickness from about 40 km to perhaps 200 km the upper 30 to 50 km of the typical continental lithosphere is crust. The mantle part of the lithosphere consists largely of peridotite. The crust is distinguished from the upper mantle by the change in chemical composition that takes place at the Moho discontinuity. Oceanic lithosphere consists mainly of mafic crust and ultramafic mantle peridotite and is denser than the continental lithosphere, for which the mantle is associated with crust made of felsic rocks. Oceanic lithosphere thickens as it ages and moves away from the mid ocean ridge. This thickening occurs by conductive cooling, which converts hot asthenosphere into lithospheric mantle, and causes the oceanic lithosphere to become increasingly thick and dense with age. Oceanic lithosphere is less dense than asthenosphere for a few tens of millions of years, but after this becomes increasingly denser than the asthenosphere. The gravitational instability of mature oceanic lithosphere has the effect that, at subduction zones, the oceanic lithosphere invariably sinks underneath the overriding lithosphere, which can be oceanic or continental. New oceanic lithosphere is constantly being produced at mid ocean ridges and is recycled back to the mantle at subduction zones. As a result, oceanic lithosphere is much younger than continental lithosphere the oldest oceanic lithosphere is about 170 million years old, while parts of the continental lithosphere are billions of years old. Oceanic Creations AB is a company based in Sweden , founded in 1986 around the so called Oceanic Creations Composite Technology OCCT , a special process for producing a carbon fibre based construction material. The company has a production plant in Varna , Bulgaria. Media has reported about a floating, pyramid shaped Hotel Maya being constructed there for deployment in Canc n , Mexico. The floating hotel is planned to be navigated through the Bosporus in 2009 or 2010. The OCCT process was originally developed for navy stealth ship s including the Visby class corvette at Kockums shipyards in Karlskrona , Sweden, and treated as a military secret. After the innovation was declassified in 2002 , Oceanic Creations AB started to explore other markets. The OCCT process is not patented, but kept as a trade secret on a 20 year license from Kockums. Articles cover issues of linguistic theory that pertain to languages of the area, report research on historical relations, or furnish new information about inadequately described languages. Monographs on the same languages are published as Oceanic Linguistics Special Publications OLSP . The journal was founded by George W. Grace at Southern Illinois University in 1962 but accompanied its editor to the University of Hawaii University of Hawai okina i in 1964 vol. 3 . It has been published by the University of Hawaii Press since 1966 vol. 5 . In 1992, the editorship passed to Byron W.
