  1. Microsoft Pascal

Microsoft Pascal was an implementation of the Pascal programming language that was developed by the Microsoft Corporation for compiler compiling programs for running on its MS DOS operating system and, in later versions, on OS 2 like many other Microsoft programming tools albeit they were only capable of generating 16 bit programs for the latter . Microsoft Pascal version 3.2 was released in 1986. The last version of Microsoft Pascal to be released was version 4.0 in 1988, when Microsoft Pascal was superseded by the somewhat short lived Microsoft QuickPascal , a cheaper development tool that Microsoft produced in order to compete with Borland s Turbo Pascal . Microsoft Pascal was priced at around 400, whereas QuickPascal was priced between 25 and 50, and the differences between the two were similar to those between Microsoft BASIC Professional Development System and Microsoft QuickBASIC . Unlike the ISO compliant Microsoft Pascal product, QuickPascal went after the ultimate compatibility with Turbo Pascal. This included not only source level compatibility, but rather complete binary compatibility with widely available unit libraries for the competitor s compiler. To achieve this level of compatibility, QuickPascal moved away from the common file format OBJ and tool set LINK, LIB shared by Microsoft s other compilers. 1. RBBS-PC

RBBS PC acronym for Remote Bulletin Board System for the Personal Computer was a public domain , open source Bulletin Board System BBS software program. It was written entirely in QuickBASIC by a large team of people, starting with Russell Lane and then later enhanced by Tom Mack and including Ken Goosens and others. It supported messaging conferences, questionnaires , BBS door doors through the tt DOORDEF.DAT tt dropfile , and much more. History In 1982 , Larry Jordan of the Capital PC Users Group started modifying some existing BBS software that had been ported from CP M by Russell Lane ref http jordannctoal.homestead.com RBBS PChistory.html RBBS PC History ref . The first major release of this effort, RBBS PC CPC09, in May 1983 was written in interpreted BASIC and included the Xmodem file transfer protocol added by Jordan. In June, 1983, Jordan turned over maintenance and enhancements to Tom Mack and Ken Goosens. The first release under Mack, version 10.0, was released July 4, 1983. New versions and features were released steadily through out the rest of the 80 s. The final complete version, 17.4, was released March 22, 1992. Since version 17.4 at least four other code paths have developed. Some work has been done to unify the code paths and to develop version 18.0 ref http netmation.com org rbbs.htm RBBS Bulletin Board System ref . Dan Drinnons CDOR Mods and Mapleleaf versions were further enhanced by Beta testers Mike Moore and Bob Manapeli using Ken Goosens LineBled program to manipulate the source code to endless variations of the program. Philosophy From the beginning of RBBS PC s development, the authors of the software had two goals as stated in the ftp ftp.simtel.net pub simtelnet msdos rbbs r174 doc.zip RBBS PC documentation To show what could be done with the BASIC language and that real programmers can do program in BASIC. To open a new medium of communication where anyone with a personal computer the ability to communicate freely. This idea was summar ...   more details

Infobox software name Virtual Advanced logo screenshot caption developer Roland De Graaf latest release version 2.10 latest release date latest preview version latest preview date operating system MS DOS OS 2 platform genre Bulletin board system license Proprietary software Proprietary website http www.virtualc.com defunct VBBS is an acronym for Virtual Bulletin Board System . It was a shareware bulletin board system BBS for DOS and later OS 2 that was conceived by Roland De Graaf in 1990. Written from scratch in QuickBASIC , it developed a loyal following. Originally it was a door for WWIV , but quickly grew into an original BBS concept on its own. By 1993, there were thousands of computers running VBBS around the world. VirtualNET, the largest VBBS message network, had close to 1500 members by version 6.14 in 1993. Up to this time, VBBS remained shareware , but in 1994 Roland released version 7.0 as a commercial product. The lifetime registrations of prior versions were not honored for this version and required anyone who wished to use this version to pay. While some did decide to pay again for the upgrade, others became unsatisfied and began looking for other alternatives. There would not be another release of VBBS. Instead, Roland switched gears again in 1995. He released Virtual Advanced VADV as the successor to VBBS. VADV contained many improvements to the old system. One notable feature was a much more powerful scripting language. It was a step forward for the software but once again SysOps were required to purchase the new software. Virtual Advanced would finally reach version 2.10. This version along with its companion, the Virtual Internet Survivor Kit VISK v1.30, would show that it indeed was advanced for its time. With the growing trend of the Internet, VADV now supported features such as POP3 , SMTP , NNTP , WWW and Finger Unix Finger . Ultimately, with the rise of the Internet , costs of upgrades and tensions within the support network, Virtual Advance ...   more details

Purpose DHPOS is freeware software that will convert any DOS or Windows computer into a fully functional cash register point of sale POS system. This project was originally started 2001 by Dale Harris as a way to alleviate boredom one summer and to prove to himself that he could write a better POS system than the professionally written POS software that he was forced to use in the chain store at which he worked ref http dhpos.com discuss phpBB2 viewtopic.php?t 816&sid e09e72d976e945a5401188d896321449 The Story behind DHPOS, How it was Born ref . After completing the software he uploaded it to his website for anyone to download for free. Interest was immediate. Soon users worldwide were downloading the software and emailing him with suggestions for new features and other ways to improve it. Many of these suggestions have been added to the software and new versions come out with new features several times a year as of 2009 . The project continues because, according to its author, it is needed. While large corporations can afford to pay for expensive POS software many small and medium enterprises cannot. A plain cash register may be affordable for them but it will not provide the information that modern businesses must have to compete. The current version 2009 of the software has hundreds of features that make it suitable for most small to medium enterprises. The major ...   more details
