  1. Quantitative psychological research

Unreferenced date March 2009 Quantitative psychological research is defined as psychology psychological research which performs mathematical modeling and statistical estimation or statistical inference . This definition distinguishes it from so called qualitative psychological research however, many psychologists do not acknowledge any real difference between quantitative and qualitative research. The validity of the distinction is discussed in the article about qualitative psychological research. Statistics is widely used in quantitative psychological research. Typically a project begins with the collection of data based on a theory or hypothesis, followed by the application of descriptive or inferential statistical methods. Often it is necessary to collect a very large volume of data, which require validating, verifying and recoding. Software packages such as PSPP and R programming language R are typically used for this purpose, and for subsequent analysis. Causal relationships are studied by manipulating factors thought to influence the phenomena of interest while controlling other variables relevant to the experimental outcomes. Researchers might measure and study the relationship between education and measurable psychological effects, whilst controlling for other key variables. Quantitatively based surveys are widely used by psychologists, and statistics such as the proportion of respondents who display one or more psychological traits reported. In such surveys, respondents are asked a set of structured questions and their responses are tabulated. The software can then perform correlation analysis or other procedures on the data. 1. Qualitative data

distinguish Qualitative research Expert subject statistics date November 2008 The term qualitative data is used to describe certain types of information . This is almost the converse of Numerical data quantitative data , in which items are more precisely described as data in terms of quantity and in which numerical values are used. However, data originally obtained as qualitative information about individual items may give rise to quantitative data if they are summarised by means of counts. Qualitative data described items in terms of some quality or categorization that may be informal or may use relatively ill defined characteristics such as warmth and flavor. However, qualitative data can include well defined aspects such as gender, nationality or commodity type. ref Dodge Y. 2003 The Oxford Dictionary of Statistical Terms , OUP. ISBN 019920613 9 ref Qualitative data can be a pass fail, yes no, or categorical data . If qualitative data use categories that are based on Subject philosophy subjective or intangible ideas, then these are generally of less value to science scientific research than quantitative data. It is sometimes possible to obtain approximate quantitative data from qualitative data for instance, asking people to rate their perception of a sensation on a Likert scale . 1. Qualitative property

Qualitative properties are properties that are observed and can generally not be measured with a numerical result. They are contrasted to Quantitative property quantitative properties which have numerical characteristics. Some engineering and scientific properties are qualitative. Qualitative properties in businesses Some important qualitative properties that concerns businesses are Human factors , human work capital is probably one of the most important issues that deals with qualitative properties. Environmental issues , since the time of the 80 s a growing aspect for businesses. Although a lot of these aspects are regulated by law and this is increasing and quantitatively measurable, there are properties that are qualitative e.g. environmental friendly Manufacturing production , responsibility for the entire life of a product from the raw material till scrap , attitude towards safe efficient minimum waste production and acting in order to achieve this. Ethic issues closely related to environmental and human issues. Things like child labour, illegal dumping of waste etc. Are considered under the name of ethic issues. 1. Qualitative variation

An index of qualitative variation IQV is a measure of statistical dispersion in nominal distribution s. There are a variety of these, but they have been relatively little studied in the statistics literature. The simplest is the variation ratio , while the most sophisticated is the information entropy . Properties There are various indices of qualitative variation a number are summarized and devised by Wilcox Harv Wilcox 1967 , Harv Wilcox 1973 , who requires the following standardization properties to be satisfied Variation varies between 0 and 1. Variation is 0 if and only if all cases belong to a single category. Variation is 1 if and only if cases are evenly divided across all category. ref This can only happen if the number of cases is a multiple of the number of categories. ref In particular, the value of these standardized indices does not depend on the number of categories or number of samples. For any index, the closer to uniform the distribution, the larger the variance, and the larger the differences in frequencies across categories, the smaller the variance. Indices of qualitative variation are in this sense complementary to information entropy , which is maximized when all cases belong to a single category and minimized in a uniform distribution, but they are not complementary in the sense of a particular IQV equaling 1 minus entropy. Indeed, information entropy can be used as an index of qualitative variation.
