The Religious Society of Friends commonly known as Quakers encouraged some values which may have been conducive to encouraging scientific talents. A theory suggested by David Hackett Fischer in his book Albion s Seed indicated early Quakers in the US preferred practical study to the more traditional studies of Greek or Latin popular with the elite. Another theory suggests their avoidance of dogma or clergy gave them a greater flexibility in response to science. Despite those arguments a major factor is agreed to be that the Quakers were initially discouraged or forbidden to go to the major law or humanities schools in Britain due to the Test Act . They also at times faced similar discriminations in the United States as many of the colonial Universities had a Puritan or Anglican orientation. This led them to attend Godless institutions or forced them to rely on hands on scientific experimentation rather than academia. Because of these issues it has been stated Quakers are better represented in science than most religions. The Quakers were the first whites to denounce slavery in the American colonies and Europe. Quakers began denouncing slavery as early as 1688 , when four German Quakers started protesting near Philadelphia . John Woolman and Anthony Benezet protested against slavery, and demanded that the Quaker society cut ties with the slave trade. These two individuals led the abolitionist movement in Pennsylvania . It was their belief that if the slave trade was stopped, then the institution of slavery would soon follow. The Pennsylvania Abolition Society consisted primarily of Quakers. In fact, seven of the ten original white members were Quakers, and 17 of the 24 who attended the four meetings held by the Pennsylvania Abolition Society were Quakers. Quakers were also prominently involved with the Underground Railroad . For example, Levi Coffin started helping runaway slaves as a child in North Carolina . Later in his life, Coffin moved to the Ohio Indiana area, where he became known as the President of the Underground Railroad. Many families assisted slaves in their travels through the Underground Railroad. Henry Stubbs and his sons helped runaway slaves get across Indiana . The Bundy family operated a station that transported groups of slaves from Belmont, Ohio Belmont to Salem, Ohio . Many Quakers were persecuted by slave owners because of their opposition to slavery. The Quakers Act 1695 was an Act of Parliament Act of the Parliament of England . The Act allowed Religious Society of Friends Quakers to substitute an affirmation where the law required an oath except in giving evidence in a criminal case or serve on a jury or hold any office of profit from the Crown. The Act also allowed legal proceedings to be taken against Quakers before a Justice of the Peace for refusing to pay tithes if it did not exceed 10. The Act would have expired in seven years but, in 1702, Parliament extended it for another eleven years by the Affirmation by Quakers Act 1701 . There are about 107,000 individual Quakers and about 44 Friends Yearly Meeting s in North America. Quakers are members of the Religious Society of Friends , a movement that started in England in the 17th Century. Some Quakers came to North America in the early days because they wanted to spread their beliefs to the British colonists there, while others came to escape the persecution that they were experiencing in Europe . The first known Quakers in North America were missionaries who arrived there in 1656. Soon other Quaker preachers arrived, colonists became convinced of Quakerism, and Quakers from Europe migrated there. The colony of Rhode Island , with its policy of religious freedom, was a frequent destination, as the Friends were persecuted by law in Massachusetts until 1681. The British colony of Pennsylvania was formed by William Penn in 1681 as a haven for persecuted Quakers. Quakers also spread into Mexico and Central America. The arrival of the Quakers Mary Fisher missionary Mary Fisher and Ann Austin are the first known Quakers to set foot in the New World. They journeyed from England to Barbados in 1656 and then went on to the Massachusetts Bay Colony . Their purpose was to spread the beliefs of the Friends among the colonists. The Quakers and Moravians Act 1838 1 & 2 Vict. c. 77 was an Act of Parliament in the United Kingdom , signed into law on August 10, 1838. Prior to this Act, Religious Society of Friends Quakers and Moravian Church Moravians had been able to give an affirmation in law affirmation in lieu of an oath where one was required for example, when giving evidence in court. This Act extended that privilege to those who were previously members of these groups and had seceded from them, retaining the conscientious objection to oaths. Any person choosing to make an affirmation under this Act was required to give a declaration to that extent, and would remain subject to the normal penalties of perjury for falsehood.
