Punjabi dramas are popular with the lower and middle class and were made famous through distribution on CDs in the mid and late 1990s. The plays are scripted but actors and performers are given enough freedom to add humour along the way while staying within boundaries. Punjabi dramas are characterised by tuants which are almost entirely of an adult nature, although this is at many times done through word play which implies something else. Later on actors of Faisalabad became famous in the scene and choreographed dances on Punjabi film songs where also introduced which increased the popularity of these stage shows considerably. Sometimes the plays also carry a moral. Humour Punjabi dramas are semi improvisional. A lot of times the actors keep going on several minutes, taunting each other, sometimes even bringing in family members such as sisters and mothers, implying there are slut s or prostitution prostitutes . Women in the stage shows are also normally of ill repute and this is made very clear through the taunts they get from male actors. Orphan date February 2009 Introduction As in any society, Urdu language theatre or stage show was one of the defining characteristics of the society. Originating from the city of Karachi , it was famous through the sub continent and with immigrant population of South Asians through the Globe. However, in Pakistan, there was an emphasis on full comedy shows, usually implementing insult comedy. My the mid 90s, Urdu stage shows started seeing their numbers dwell and it quickly went out of the scene. However by the beginning of 2000s, the industry shifted to Punjab region Punjab . Originating in the city of Lahore , and eventually being staffed by comedians from Faisalabad , the Industry saw a sudden boom. This was fueled by Dances , where similar to an Urdu Punjabi Hindi movie a song would start in the middle of the scene. Shown throughout Lahore on Cable operators, it quickly spread to the rest of Punjab and eventually the world wide immigrant Punjabi population, through the medium of Compact Dics and increasingly DVD. Format Punjabi Stage Shows can be best described as semi improvisational insult comedy. With a loose but complete story, comedians often go out of character while indiscriminately insulting the rest of the crew. Very often jokes and replies are made on the stage, leading t9o the crew bursting in laughter. There is even interaction with the audience at time.
