  1. Punishment (psychology)

In operant conditioning , punishment is any change in a human or animal s surroundings that occurs after a given behavior or response which reduces the likelihood of that behavior occurring again in the future. As with reinforcement , it is the behavior , not the animal, that is punished. Whether a change is or is not punishing is only known by its effect on the rate of the behavior, not by any hostile or aversives aversive features of the change. For example, painful stimulation which would serve as a punisher in many cases serves to reinforce some behaviors of the Sadomasochism masochist . Types of punishment There are basic types or models of punishment? two types of punishment in operant conditioning positive punishment or type I punishment , an experimenter punishes a response by presenting an aversive stimulus into the animal s surroundings a brief electric shock, for example . negative punishment or type II punishment , a valued, appetitive stimulus is removed as in the removal of a feeding dish . 1. Psychological punishment

Unreferenced date December 2009 A psychological punishment is a type of punishment that relies not or only in secondary order on the actual harm inflicted such as corporal punishment s or fines but on psychological effects, mainly emotions, such as fear, shame and guilt. This can occasionally cause severe cardiac harm, even death, but those are not strictly intended, and in the case of torture accidental death would even defeat the purpose. Citation needed date February 2007 Psychological punishments that are particularly cruel or severe may be considered psychological torture . Very common is the use of shame through private or, especially, public humiliation . For example, publicly shaving a woman s head may not only humiliate her in front of those who witness her shearing, it may also deprive her of her hair for as long as it takes to grow back, thus serving as a continual reminder of her punishment and her humiliation. 1. Mirror punishment

Unreferenced date October 2008 Expert subject Philosophy date October 2008 A mirror punishment is a penal form of poetic justice which reflects the nature or means of the crime in the means of often physical punishment as a form of retributive justice &mdash the practice of repaying a wrongdoer in kind . It can be an application of the lex talionis an eye for an eye , but is not always proportional justice , as a similar method may be used to produce a worse or milder effect than the crime it retaliates . The simplest method of mirror punishment is to enact the same action upon the criminal as the criminal perpetrated upon the victim. For example, thieves have the same amount of money taken from them as they stole one who strikes another is struck in the same way one who wilfully causes another person s death is killed and so on. Often, however, a more esoteric method of mirror punishment is used, which implies punishing the part of the victim s body used to commit the crime. Extreme examples include the amputation of the hands of a thief , as still permitted by Sharia law, or during the Middle Ages in Europe or disabling the foot or leg of a runaway slave. Other examples include the punishment of adultery adulterous women by the insertion of irritating substances into their vaginas in the past hot pokers were sometimes used . A less extreme example is putting soap into a child s mouth for using inappropriate language referred to in English as washing someone s mouth out with soap . Another method to accomplish poetic justice is to mirror the physical method of the crime, e.g. executing a murderer with his own weapon, burning arsonists alive, or in a more far fetched example, boiling a counterfeiter alive because bullion is boiled to be minted . 1. Suspension (punishment)

refimprove date April 2008 Suspension is a form of punishment that people receive for violating rules and regulations. Workplace Suspension is a common practice in the Employment workplace for being in violation of company workplace policy policy . Work suspensions occur when a business manager or supervisor deems an action of an employee, whether intentional or unintentional, to be a violation of policy that should result in a course of punishment, and when the employee s absence during the suspension period does not hurt the company. This form of action hurts the employee because s he will have no hours of work for the period s he is suspended for and therefore will not get paid, unless the suspension is with pay, or is challenged and subsequently overturned. Some jobs, which pay on salary , may have paid suspensions, in which the affected worker will be barred from coming to work but will still receive pay. Generally, suspensions are deemed most effective if the affected worker remains unpaid. Suspensions are usually given after other means of counseling statements have been exhausted, but some violations may result in immediate suspension.
