A pullswitch is a switch that is actuated by means of a Link chain chain or string. An electric pullswitch is attached to a toggle type switch one pull to switch on and next pull to switch off. The most common use of a pullswitch is to operate a ceiling electric light . The ceiling fan is another appliance often operated by pull switches. Pull switches may be either two position open or closed or multi position allowing for different fan speeds or levels of illumination . Mounted inside a pullswitch, there could be two types of two position toggle switches. In both cases the stable physical open or closed situation would be switch in outer and string in upper position. One type would switch to closed alternatively open already during the initial pull in the string. The other type would switch to closed or open only when releasing after a full pull. With the first type, the weight of the string and handle could accidentally switch the load intermittently on and off, when still around the initial position depending on the internal spring . John Henry Pull 25 June 1899 10 November 1960 was an unlikely archaeological hero. He started life as a soldier in World War I where he learnt surveying skills. After a stint as a gramophone salesman he became a postman and a security guard but always his main interest was archaeology . He was a key member of the Worthing Archaeological Society . He was responsible for the finding and excavation of some of the most important neolithic sites in Southern Great Britain Britain including the Flint mines at Blackpatch , Harrow Hill, Gloucestershire Harrow Hill , Church Hill , Cissbury in Sussex , England in 1922. Because he was not a professional archaeologist, he was unpopular with some of the experts in the field at the time, who constantly shrugged off Pull s work as amateur and unimportant. In the end, much of Pull s work and findings were given to Worthing Museum and Art Gallery which holds a large archive. The main results of the Pull s excavations at Blacvkpatch, Church Hill and Cissbury between 1922 and 1956 housed in the archive were finally published in 2001 by Miles Russell of Bournemouth University ref Miles Russell ed 2001 Rough Quarries Rocks and Hills John Pull and the Neolithic Flint Mines of Sussex , Oxbow Books Oxford ref .
