File Titus Cornelius Celsus.jpg 200px thumb Celsus from Promptuarii Iconum Insigniorum Titus Cornelius Celsus , Roman usurper under Gallienus , one of the Thirty Tyrants Roman Thirty Tyrants enumerated by Trebellius Pollio . In the twelfth year of Gallienus reign 265 , when usurpers were springing up in every quarter of the Roman Empire Roman world, a certain Celsus, who had never risen higher in the service of the state than the rank of a military tribune, living quietly on his lands in Africa Roman province Africa , in no way remarkable except as a man of upright life and commanding person, was suddenly proclaimed emperor by Vibius Passienus , proconsul of the province, and Fabius Pomponianus , general of the limes Tripolitanus Libyan frontier . So sudden was the movement, that the appropriate trappings of dignity had not been provided, and the hands of Galliena , a cousin it is said of the lawful monarch, invested the new prince with a robe snatched from the statue of a goddess. The downfall of Celsus was not less rapid than his elevation he was slain on the seventh day, his body was devoured by dogs, and the loyal inhabitants of Sicca testified their devotion to the reigning sovereign by devising an insult to the memory of his rival unheard of before that time. The effigy of the traitor was raised high upon a cross, round which the rabble danced in triumph. See also Gallienus usurpers . 1. Publius Rupilius

Publius Rupilius , Roman Republic Roman statesman, consul in 132 BC. During the inquiry that followed the death of Tiberius Gracchus , conducted by himself and his colleague Popillius Laenas , he proceeded with the utmost severity against the supporters of Gracchus. In the same year he was despatched to Sicily , where he suppressed the revolt of the slaves under Eunus . During 131 BC he remained as proconsul of the island, and, with the assistance of ten commissioners appointed by the Roman Senate Senate , drew up regulations for the organization of Sicily as a province. These regulations were known by the title of leges Rupiliae , though they were not laws in the strict sense. Rupilius was subsequently brought to trial 123 BC and condemned for his treatment of the friends of Gracchus. The disgrace of his condemnation, added to disappointment at the failure of his brother to obtain the consulship in spite of the efforts of Scipio , caused his death shortly afterwards. 1. Publius Lentulus

Publius Lentulus is a fictitious person, said to have been Governor of Judea before Pontius , and to have written a letter to the Roman Senate , concerning Jesus . Authenticity The letter of Lentulus is certainly apocryphal for a number of reasons. There never was a Governor of Jerusalem no Procurator of Judea is known to have been called Lentulus and a Roman governor would not have addressed the Senate in the way represented. Lastly a Roman writer would not have employed the expressions, prophet of truth , sons of men or Jesus Christ . The former two are Hebrew idioms, the third is taken from the New Testament . The letter, therefore, gives a description of Jesus such as Christian piety conceived him. Or date May 2010 The letter quotes how the Hebrews described Jesus not the Romans. Thus Publius Lentulus recording of how they viewed the person of Jesus is descriptive but not necessarily the view of the Roman author. This does not invalidate the letter itself. Further, the term Jesus is translated from Yeshua or God rescues in Hebrew and Aramic. Christ is taken from the Greek Christos meaning Messiah or anointed one in Hebrew Aramic. The name ascribed to the man described by Publius Lentulus Jesus the Christ is therefore consistent with Jewish belief that an anointed one would rise up amongst the Jews as supreme king ruling over all Israel and heralding an era of lasting peace. Origin The letter was first printed in the Life of Christ by Ludolph the Carthusian Cologne, 1474 , and in the Introduction to the works of St. Anselm Nuremberg, 1491 . But it is neither the work of St. Anselm nor of Ludolph. According to the manuscript of Jena, a certain Giacomo Colonna found the letter in 1421 in an ancient Roman document sent to Rome from Constantinople . It must be of Greek language ... . 1. Publius Varinius

Publius Varinius was a Roman praetor in 73 BC and proconsul in 72 BC and suffered several defeats against Spartacus rebellious slaves during the Third Servile War . The history has gaps in it and all we know is that an advance force of 2,000 led by Varinius legate Lucius Furius was defeated and that a later encounter also ended in defeat another 4,000 men. The rebels sacked Varinius camp with an estimated 10,000 men, women and children but mostly men. Selected ancient sources Sallust, Histories 3.95 98 Maurenbrecher. Frontinus, Strategemata 1.5.22.
