The Journal of Occurrences , also known as Journal of the Times and Journal of Transactions in Boston , was a series of newspaper articles published from 1768 to 1769 in the New York Journal , chronicling the occupation of Boston, Massachusetts , by the British Army . Authorship of the articles was anonymous, but is usually attributed to Samuel Adams , then the clerk of the Massachusetts House of Representatives . William Cooper, Boston s town clerk, has also been named as a possible author. The articles may have been written by a group of men working in collaboration. File Boston 1768.jpg thumb Paul Revere s engraving of British troops landing in Boston in 1768. alt A wide view of a port town with several wharves. In the foreground there are eight large sailing ships and an assortment of smaller vessels. Soldiers are disembarking from small boats onto a long wharf. The skyline of the town, with nine tall spires and many smaller buildings, is in the distance. A key at the bottom of the drawing indicates some prominent landmarks and the names of the warships. The occupation of Boston arose from colonial resistance to the Townshend Acts , passed by the Parliament of Great Britain British Parliament in 1767. In response to acts, the Massachusetts House of Representatives issued a Massachusetts Circular Letter circular letter in February 1768. Written primarily by Samuel Adams, the circular letter argued that the Townshend Acts were a violation of the British Constitution because they taxed British subjects No taxation without representation without their consent . Lord Hillsborough , British secretary of state for the colonies, ordered the Massachusetts House to revoke the circular letter, but the legislature refused. These phenomena included Vision religion visions , dreams , miraculous healings , instances of persons passing out during Wesley s sermons, supernatural answers to prayer , the unusual fates of some of Wesley s critics, and cases of demon possession . Historical Context The book cannot be truly understood without understanding some of the historical context regarding Wesley and his influence. Two groups today trace their heritage back to Wesley. Both of these groups have developed differing ideas regarding Wesley and his attitude towards miracles. These groups are the more cautious when it comes to miracles Methodist Holiness Churches and the more accepting Pentecostal and Charismatic movement Charismatic Churches.
