  1. History of public international law

The history of public international law examines the evolution of state practice and the doctrinal developments in international law. In that respect, it is different from international private law and comparative history of constitutional law. Although international law in the modern sense of the word has only existed since about the 16th century, many historians of international law also take ancient history into account as a source for the early development of international legal principles. In that respect, important concepts are derived from the practice between Greek city states and the Roman law concept of ius gentium which regulated contacts between Roman citizens and non Roman people . These principles where not universal however. In East Asia, political theory was based not on the equality of states, but rather the cosmological supremacy of the Emperor of China . Early history The ancient Greeks before Alexander the Great formed many small states that constantly interacted. In peace and in war, an inter state culture evolved that prescribed certain rules for how these states would interact. These rules did not apply to interactions with non Greek states, but among themselves the Greek inter state community resembled in some respects the modern international community. 1. Public historian

Cleanup date November 2007 Unreferenced date February 2007 There are two categories of public historians . The first, and most widely understood definition of a public historian is a practitioner of public history . This definition holds that public historians are generally regarded as those people who create history for public consumption history as digested outside of the academy . Their work can take place in various locations and formats, including museums, historic sites, archives, films, and books. Generally speaking, then, the difference between a historian and a public historian pertains to audience . In the first case, public historians aim to educate and engage the public through history historians , on the other hand, generally speak to an academic audience, and not the general public. Public history has received a boost in popularity over the past thirty years, which has resulted in the development of the second form of public history practice. This second definition of public historians has to do with those historians who, within the academy , study the public consumption of history . In addition, professional historians giving objective expert evidence before courts and tribunals may also be considered as public historians . There is a publication dedicated to this theme, Public Historian a review of the index at http www.ncph.org Portals 13 Publications TPH 20Index 20March2008.pdf is an interesting field trip into the many facets of public history .
