The Emergency PublicWarning System is a system used in the province of Alberta , Canada , whereby local or provincial authorities can warn the public about impending or current emergencies affecting their area. The system was proposed by the provincial government after an Edmonton Tornado F4 tornado ripped through Edmonton , Alberta on July 31, 1987, killing 27 and causing millions of dollars in damage. The EPWS can be activated by local police, fire, and environmental agencies by Environment Canada and by other provincial and local authorities as required. It can be activated for any of the following reasons Severe weather Flood Wildfire Hazardous material release Terrorist threat Water contamination AMBER Alert Other threats to life, property and safety. The EPWS was originally operated by the CKUA Radio Network but is now operated by a private company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. The PublicWarning System is a network of civil defense siren s installed by the Singapore Civil Defence Force on over 2,000 strategic points in Singapore to warn Singaporeans of impeding dangers and air raids. Currently the siren network is only used to celebrate the island s Total Defence February 15 and Civil Defence Days September 15 . History When it was a British colony, Singapore had mechanically powered air raid sirens over the island, but the system did not work perfectly and was defunct after World War II. Then, in the 1990s, the SCDF planned a network of powerful electrical sirens throughout Singapore to warn the people of natural disasters and air raids. The first of these sirens were completed in 1991 and tested in 1992 on certain parts of Singapore, and by now nearly every part of Singapore has the sirens installed on the selected buildings rooftops or on the ground if there are no buildings. Types There are a total of four installation types, they can be installed with Standard eight speakers joined together on the left and right sides of a thin medium length steel pole for buildings with short, medium or no rooftops . A warning track is the term for the part of the baseball field that is closest to the wall or fence and is typically made of dirt, instead of grass or artificial turf like most of the field. It runs Parallel geometry parallel to the ballpark s wall and looks like a track and field running track . The change of terrain from grass to dirt serves as a warning for fielders trying to make a deep catch that they are running out of room, since it is often difficult for the fielder to keep his eye on a fly ball while keeping track of his position relative to the wall. Despite the warning track s presence, it is common to see outfielders crash into the wall to make a catch, due either to a desire to field the play regardless of the outcome or because they fail to register the warning. The term warning track comes from Yankee Stadium 1923 Old Yankee Stadium , where an actual running track was built for the use of track and field events. This also helped outfielders know when they were approaching the wall, and soon every ballpark was using one.
