Pseudorandom number generator n sequence pseudorandomness white noise References references cdma ...In cryptography , pseudorandom noise PRN is a Signalling telecommunication signal similar to noise physics noise which satisfies one or more of the standard tests for statistical randomness . Although it seems to lack any definite pattern , pseudorandom noise consists of a deterministic sequence of Pulse signal processing pulses that will repeat itself after its period. ref FS1037C MS188 ref In cryptography cryptographic device s, the pseudorandom noise pattern is determined by a key cryptography key and the repetition period can be very long, even millions of years. Pseudorandom noise is used in some synthesizer electronic musical instruments , either by itself or as an input to subtractive synthesis , and in many white noise machine s. In spread spectrum systems, the receiver correlation correlates a locally generated signal with the received signal information theory signal . Such spread spectrum systems require a set of one or more codes or sequences such that Like random noise, the local sequence has a very low correlation with any other sequence in the set, or with the same sequence at a significantly different time offset, or with narrowband interference, or with thermal noise. Unlike random noise, it must be easy to generate exactly the same sequence at both the transmitter and the receiver, so the receiver s locally generated sequence has a very high correlation with the transmitted sequence. In a direct sequence spread spectrum system, each bit in the pseudorandom binary sequence is known as a chip and the inverse of its period as chip rate . Compare bit rate and baud . In a frequency hopping spread spectrum sequence, each value in the pseudorandom sequence is known as a channel number and the inverse of its period as the hop rate . In cryptography , the term pseudorandom permutation , abbreviated PRP , refers to a function that cannot be distinguished from a random permutation that is, a permutation selected at random with uniform probability, from the family of all permutations on the function s domain with practical effort. A pseudorandom permutation family is a collection of pseudorandom permutations, where a specific permutation may be chosen using a key. The idealized abstraction of a block cipher is a truly random permutation. If a distinguishing algorithm exists that achieves significant advantage cryptography advantage with less effort than specified by the block cipher s security parameter this usually means the effort required should be about the same as a brute force search through the cipher s key space , then the cipher is considered broken at least in a certificational sense, even if such a break doesn t immediately lead to a practical security failure. Orphan date February 2009 A pseudorandom encoder is an electro mechanical device used for measuring distance and finding position. It is different from the conventional absolute and incremental encoder in its disk pattern, which gives it aspects of the other two designs. The disk of a pseudorandom encoder has an evenly spaced notch design just as an incremental encoder to measure distance. A second track of code is used to find the position just like an absolute encoder however, an absolute encoder tells position from reading from multiple parallel tracks while a pseudorandom encoder uses one single track. This aspect allows pseudorandom rotary encoders to have smaller diameters and larger through holes. To know its position, the encoder must first move a certain distance to read the code. This distance is generally small, about 1 2 degrees for rotary encoders and 1 mm for linear encoders, though this idiosyncrasy does hinder its usefulness in some applications such as trackball track balls since position is not immediately known when the system starts. ref cite web url http www.virtualabsolute.com VAoverview.htm title A New Kind of Encoder virtualabsolute.com ref See also Rotary encoder References reflist Category Dimensional instruments ... more details

In cryptography , a pseudorandom function family , abbreviated PRF , is a collection of efficiently computable Function computer science functions which emulate a random oracle in the following way no efficient algorithm can distinguish with significant Advantage cryptography advantage between a function chosen randomly from the PRF family and a random oracle a function whose outputs are fixed completely at random . Pseudorandom functions are vital tools in the construction of cryptographic primitive s, especially secure encryption encryption schemes . Pseudorandom functions are not to be confused with pseudorandom number generatorpseudorandom generators PRGs . The guarantee of a PRG is that a single output appears random if the input was chosen at random. On the other hand, the guarantee of a PRF is that all its outputs appear random, regardless of how the corresponding inputs were chosen, as long as the function was drawn at random from the PRF family. A pseudorandom function family can be constructed from any pseudorandomgenerator, using, for example, the construction given by Goldreich, Shafi Goldwasser Goldwasser , and Micali. ref Oded Goldreich , Shafi Goldwasser , Silvio Micali 1986 How to Construct Random Functions , Journal of the ACM , vol.33, no.4, p.792 807. doi 10.1145 6490.6503 http theory.lcs.mit.edu cis pubs shafi 1986 jacm.pdf preprint http www.math.weizmann.ac.il oded ggm.html web page and preprint ref See also Pseudorandom permutation References references Category Theory of cryptography Category Cryptographic primitives Category Pseudorandomness he ... more details

Unreferenced date January 2009 In cryptography , the shrinking generator is a form of pseudorandom number generator intended to be used in a stream cipher . It was published in Crypto 1993 by Don Coppersmith , Hugo Krawczyk , and Yishay Mansour . The shrinking generator uses two linear feedback shift register s. One, called the A sequence, generates output bits, while the other, called the S sequence, controls their output. Both A and S are clocked if the S bit is 1, then the A bit is output if the S bit is 0, the A bit is discarded, nothing is output, and we clock the registers again. This has the disadvantage that the generator s output rate varies irregularly, and in a way that hints at the state of S this problem can be overcome by buffering the output. Despite this simplicity, the shrinking generator has remained remarkably resistant to cryptanalysis there are currently no known attacks better than exhaustive search when the feedback polynomials are secret. An interesting variant is the self shrinking generator . An implementation of a shrinking generator in Python This example uses two Galois LFRSs to produce the output pseudorandom bitstream. Orphan date October 2008 The summation generator , created in 1985, by Rainer Rueppel, was a cryptography and security front runner in the late 1980s. It operates by taking the output of two LFSR s through an adder with carry. The operation s strength is that it is nonlinear . However, through the early 1990s various attacks against the summation generator eventually led to its fall to a correlation attack. In 1995 Klapper and Goresky were able to determine the summation generator s sequence in only 2 sup 19 sup bits. An improved summation generator with 2 bit memory was then proposed by cryptographers Lee and Moon. In the new generator scheme an extra bit of memory is added to the nonlinear combining Function mathematics function . The objective in the modification was to make the summation generator immune to correlation attack . An attack against the improved summation generator was reported by Mex Perera and Shepherd in 2002 by exploting linear relations. Besides, in June 2005 an algebraic attack was developed. Using this attack a PC can calculate the initial state of the summation generator within 3 minutes even with 256 bit LFSR s References R. A. unreferenced date January 2011 A shunt generator is a method of generating electricity in which field winding and Armature electrical engineering armature winding are connected in parallel, and in which the armature supplies both the load current and the field current. A Direct current or DC shunt generator is a type of shunt generator that requires a DC field current. A shunt generator can be parallel or in series to the armature. There are four types of shunt generators short shunt, long shunt, series, or parallel. Shunt wound In this field winding is connected in parallel with the armature conductors and have the full voltage of the generator applied across them. The field coils consist of many turns of small wire. They are connected in parallel with the load. In other words, they are connected across the output voltage of the armature. Current in the field windings of a shunt wound generator is independent of the load current currents in parallel branches are independent of each other . Since field current, and therefore field strength, is not affected by load current, the output voltage remains more nearly constant than does the output voltage of the series wound generator. In actual use, the output voltage in a dc shunt wound generator varies inversely as load current varies. The output voltage decreases as load current increases because the voltage drop across the armature resistance increases E IR . In a series wound generator, output voltage varies directly with load current. In the shunt wound generator, output voltage varies inversely with load current. A combination of the two types can overcome the disadvantages of both. This combination of windings is called the compound wound dc generator. Within seconds of a utility Power outage outage an automatic transfer switch senses the power loss, commands the generator to start and then transfers the electrical load to the Electrical generator generator . The standby generator begins supplying power to the Electrical network circuits . After utility power returns, the automatic transfer switch transfers the electrical load back to the utility and signals the standby generator to shut off. It then returns to standby mode where it awaits the next outage. To ensure a proper response to an outage, a standby generator runs weekly self tests. Most units run on diesel fuel diesel , natural gas or propane liquid propane gas . Automatic standby generator systems may be required by building code s for critical safety systems such as elevators in high rise buildings, fire protection systems, standby lighting, or medical and life support equipment.
