The sole species, Pseudolarix amabilis is commonly known as Golden Larch , though it is not a true larch Larix , being more closely related to Keteleeria , Fir Abies and Cedrus . It is native to eastern China , occurring in small areas in the mountains of southern Anhui , Zhejiang , Fujian , Jiangxi , Hunan , Hubei and eastern Sichuan , at altitudes of 100 1500 m. Golden Larch is sometimes known under an old scientific name Pseudolarix kaempferi , but this may cause confusion with Larix kaempferi , the Japanese Larch . The shoots are dimorphic, with long shoots and short shoots similar to a larch, though the short shoots are not so markedly short, lengthening about 5  mm annually. 1. Keteleeria

italic title Taxobox name Keteleeria image Keteleeria evelyniana.jpg image caption Keteleeria evelyniana regnum Plant ae divisio Pinophyta classis Pinophyta Pinopsida ordo Pinales familia Pinaceae genus Keteleeria genus authority Elie Abel Carri re Carri re subdivision ranks Species subdivision Keteleeria davidiana br Keteleeria evelyniana br Keteleeria fortunei Keteleeria is a genus of three species of Pinophyta coniferous tree s in the family Pinaceae , related to the genera Nothotsuga and Pseudolarix . It is distinguished from Nothotsuga by the much larger conifer cone cones , and from Pseudolarix by the evergreen leaf leaves and the cones not disintegrating readily at maturity. All three genera share the unusual feature of male cones produced in umbel s of several together from a single bud, and also in their ability, very rare in the Pinaceae, of being able to coppice . The genus is found in southern China from Shaanxi south to Guangdong and Yunnan , Taiwan , Hainan , northern Laos and Vietnam . They are evergreen trees reaching 35 m tall. The leaves are flat, needle like, 1.5 7 cm long and 2 4 mm broad. The cones are erect, 6 22 cm long, and mature in about 6 8 months after pollination cone size and scale shape is very variable within all three species. The variability of the cones has led in the past to the description of several additional species up to 16 species have been named , but most authorities now only accept three species. For a different viewpoint, see the Flora of China link below. The genus name honours J.B. Keteleer 1813 1903 , a France French nurseryman. Unreferenced date December 2009 Image Hunnewell Arboretum, view to Wellesley College 1901 .jpg thumb right 250px Hunnewell Arboretum as of 1901, view towards Wellesley College . The Walter Hunnewell Arboretum is a 9 hectare 22 acre arboretum , containing over 500 species of woody plants in 53 families, as well as a 140 year old topiary garden of native Eastern White Pine and Eastern Arborvitae . Specialty greenhouses including the grape house and peach house have been cared for by five generations of the Hunnewell family. The Arboretum is located at 845 Washington Street, Wellesley, Massachusetts , United States USA , near Boston, Massachusetts Boston . History About 1843, Horatio Hollis Hunnewell 1810 1902 began the Arboretum at Wellesley. Hunnewell took great interest in planting species of evergreens that had not previously been available in the United States. Today s pinetum of rare, mature specimens includes Torreya nucifera , a massive weeping European Beech in front of the 19th century Italianate mansion, and one of the oldest Dawn Redwood s in the United States. The collection of specimen trees and shrubs include towering American white oak White and Pedunculate oak English Oaks , Tilia linden s, Liriodendron tulip tree s, Taxodium bald cypress and Chinese Pseudolarix Golden Larch , as well as different species and cultivars of azaleas , lilac s, viburnum s, Holly hollies , Cherry weeping cherries and rhododendrons . The Hunnewell rhododendrons may be the oldest cultivated specimens in the United States, as H. H. Hunnewell started planting them in the 1850s and 1860s in his estate. Some of these original plants likely are still alive. He staged an exhibit of large rhododendrons on Boston Common park Boston Common in 1873, which helped to make them popular in U.S. cultivation. The Hunnewell Pine Pinus x hunnewellii , a Hybrid biology hybrid between Eastern White Pine and Japanese White Pine , was first raised at the Walter Hunnewell Arboretum in 1952.
