  1. Notional profit

unreferenced date September 2009 Notional Profit A contract usually takes several years to get itself completed. If the profit on such contracts is recorded only after their completion, then wide fluctuations may be noted in the profit figures of contractors from year to year. To avoid these fluctuations in the reported profits and to reflect the revenue in the accounting period during which the activity is undertaken, the profit in respect of each contract in progress is transferred to the profit and loss account of the year by calculating the notional profit. The portion of notional profit to be transferred to the profit and loss account depends on the stage of completion of a contract. 1. Tax profit

Unreferenced date November 2006 Tax profit or taxable profit is used to distinguish between accounting profit or earnings the number that is generally referred to in financial results for public companies and quoted in the press . Taxable profit is the number that is used to calculate tax on income. For a number of reasons, taxable profit may differ from reported earnings, and may be higher or lower. Company financial reports often distinguish between profit before tax and after tax profit. Example A company has accounting profit before tax of 100, but due to the use of accelerated depreciation , has a taxable profit of 50. The company pays profit tax at a rate of 20 . In this simple example, the company would report the following Profit before tax 100 Taxable profit 50 Taxes 10 After tax profit 90 Depending on the reason for the differences between profit before tax and taxable profit, the company may show a tax liability deferred tax or tax asset to account for future taxes. Depending on the circumstances and accounting standards , taxes paid in cash and taxes shown on the profit and loss statement may also differ. Taxable profit is rarely shown in the published financial statements . Due to the differences between nominal tax rates and actual taxes paid, analysts sometimes refer to the effective tax rate , which is actual taxes divided by profit before tax. In the example above, the effective tax rate would be 10 . 1. Profit center

A profit center is a part of a corporation that directly adds to its Profit accounting profit . Overview A profit center is a section of a company treated as a separate business. Thus profits or losses for a profit center are calculated separately A profit center manager is held accountable for both revenues, and costs expenses , and therefore, profits. What this means in terms of managerial responsibilities is that the manager has to drive the sales revenue generating activities which leads to cash inflows and at the same time control the cost cash outflows causing activities. This makes the profit center management more challenging than cost centre management. Profit center management is equivalent to running an independent business because a profit center business unit or department is treated as a distinct entity enabling revenues and expenses to be determined and its profitability to be measured. Business organizations may be organized in terms of profit centers where the profit center s revenues and expenses are held separate from the main company s in order to determine their profitability. Usually different profit centers are separated for accounting purposes so that the management can follow how much profit each center makes and compare their relative efficiency ratio efficiency and profit. Examples of typical profit centers are a store, a sales organization and a consulting organization whose profitability can be measured. Peter Drucker originally coined the term profit center around 1945. He later recanted, calling it One of the biggest mistakes I have made. He later asserted that there are only cost centers within a business, and The only profit center is a customer whose cheque hasn t bounced. ref cite book last Drucker first Peter F. title Managing in the Next Society publisher St. Martin s Griffin date 2002 location New York, New York 10010 pages 84 url ... fr Centre de profit nl Profit center pt Centro de responsabilidade Centro de resultados fi Tulosyksikk ...   more details

  1. Profit efficiency

Profit Efficiency from a Macroeconomics macro economic perspective is the concept that an economy, industry or supply chain is expending an optimally balanced level of rent for the use of capital. Economies where too much profit is being extracted are over paying the owners of capital at the expense of other contributors to a productive economy or industry. Profit Efficient economies and industries are paying the minimum profit to owners of capital required to maintain the optimal level and distribution of capital investment. This concept has importance when discussing the relative outcome efficiency of industries such as the US Health Care System which has high customer costs, high government subsidy and yet has relatively poor health outcomes. 1. Profit motive

For maximization and minimization in the mathematical sense optimization mathematics The profit motive was the concept in economics that refers to individuals being provided incentive to relinquish some of their spending power i.e. capital for deployment to a productive purpose. If humans are rational and self interested see Homo economicus , then they should only divert some of their capital toward production for others in society i.e. invest if there is some payback for their self sacrifice and risk. If there was no profit motive then the rational actor would merely conserve their capital for personal use and no investment would occur. The concept of profit motive was first raised by Adam Smith to explain why rational actors should invest their personal capital and why they needed to be provided a rent for use of that capital. Adam Smith also explained why the profit motive was an intrinsic enabler of the efficient utilisation of an economy s resources toward society s overall benefit. Economies that are utilising their economic resource for maximum sustainable societal benefit need to be both Profit efficiency profit efficient and productivity efficient including labour efficiency, resource efficiency and sustainability . The profit motive must be sufficiently high to incentivise owners of capital to deploy their capital, but not so high as to extract too much rent from the productive capacity of the economy. The theory proposed now by most modern economist s is that goal of an economy is the maximization of growth and therefore Profit economics profit see Milton Friedman . This being the key difference between classical economists like Smith and modern economists. As a result, in modern economics, profit has been elevated from being merely a key plank in optimising societal benefit the goal of classical economists , to becoming the sole purpose of economies. 1. Profit chart

Orphan date November 2006 The term profit chart is often used to describe a misleading marketing tool frequently employed by business opportunity business opportunities . It is little more than a multiplication table based on a completely hypothetical estimate. North American Vending was fined by the government for using profit charts. The National Bulk Vendors Association advises Do not take seriously a promoter who says If a vending machine does five vends a day, then 100 vending machines will do 500 vends per day. The math is perfect, but the question is whether the particular vending machine can realistically do five vends per day, especially at the location you may be able to place the vending machine. However, like all statistical models, profit charts have myriad valid applications when used properly and honestly. One may use a model to predict which customers will buy and which will not, but traditionally these models are trained only to make the best buy not buy predictions. A profit chart is a derivative of a model that takes into account the 2x2 cost profit matrix. If one wanted to predict a sale, the model would take into account 1 The cost of predicting a sale when the customer does not buy salesman s pay, catalogue, etc . 2 The loss from predicting a no sale when the customer would have bought. 3 The benefit from predicting a no sale when the customer did not want to buy. 4 The revenue from predicting a sale when the customer does want to buy. Fixed costs may be applied to the above scenarios if the type of business requires it. The profit matrix allows models to be built for maximal profit rather than maximal accuracy.
