File Dark cell.JPG 300px thumb Middle Ages A prisoncell or holding cell or lock up is a small room in a prison , or police station where a prisoner is held. Prison cells are usually about 6 by 8 feet in size with steel or brick walls and one solid or barred door that locks from the outside. Many modern prison cells are pre cast. Citation needed date February 2010 Solid doors may have a window that allows the prisoner to be observed from the outside. Furnishings and fixtures inside the cell are constructed so that they cannot be easily broken and are anchored to the walls or floor. Stainless steel lavatories and commodes are also used. This prevents vandalism or the making of weapons. There are a number of prison and prisoncell configurations, from simple police station holding cells to massive cell blocks in larger correctional facilities. In the United Kingdom , cells in a police station are the responsibility of the Custody Sergeant , who also logs each detainee and allocates him or her an available cell. Custody Sergeants also ensure cells are clean and as germ free as possible, in accordance with the Human Rights Act . Refimprove date August 2007 A kishka is a type of prisoncell used in Soviet Union Soviet prisons. The cell was named after the gut lang ru wikt , kishka k shka , in that it was tall and narrow, like an intestine , but more like a chimney. The prisoner had room to stand, but could not sit or kneel, let alone lie down. In some Soviet prisons there was no drainage and the prisoner was forced to excrete standing up and to stand in his own urine and feces. In some cases the cells were never cleaned. Prisoners could be held in these cells for months at a time. quote S awomir Rawicz Rawicz was transferred to an immense fortress prison in Kharkiv Kharkov , Ukraine, where he became the personal project of a huge, muscular and inventively sadistic NKVD major known as The Bull. He ran his interrogation sessions like an eminent surgeon, always showing off his skill before a changing crowd of junior officers, reflected Rawicz. His methods were despicably ingenious. One of The Bull s preferred methods of breaking his subjects will was to insert them in a kishka. No provision was made for the inmates bodily functions and the kishkas were never cleaned. Each day, Rawicz would be hauled out of his tiny cell, hosed off, and sent to The Bull for interrogation and torture. ref Freedom Trek Grigg, William Norman April 19, 2004 The New American http www.thefreelibrary.com Freedom trek fleeing the Soviet Gulag, Slavomir Rawicz and six ... a0115696394 ref ref The Long Walk by S awomir Rawicz 1956 ref ref To Tell the Truth Is it fact or is it fiction? Insurrection A prison mutiny took place between 21 and 23 February 1995 at Serkadji Prison. The catalyst to the mutiny was the escape of 4 prisoners aided by a guard. During the escape attempt four guards and one prisoner were killed. On the morning of 21 February, a small group attempted to escape, having been given 4 guns and 3 grenades by a recently appointed prison guard, Hamid Mebarki. After killing 4 prison guards, they began opening cell doors, and the prisoners quickly started a mutiny. They sought to negotiate with the authorities for guarantees of the safety of those prisoners who had not been party to the killing of the guards the authorities considered negotiation inappropriate, and ordered them back to their cells. At mid afternoon, the security forces stormed the prison shooting and grenades continued until about 11 am the next day. Some human rights groups cited claims that the government had executed prisoners after resistance stopped without due process and shot the wounded. After the failed breakout security forces killed ninety six prisoners according to official figures other sources claimed up to 110 while trying to suppress the resulting mutiny.
