The rial also called the rial sebili or piastre in French language French was the currency of Tunis until 1891. It was subdivided into 16 kharub caroub , each of 13 fals burbe . The fals was further subdivided into 6 qafsi burben . The nasri asper was worth 2 fals. The denomination was often either not given on coins or only indicated by a numeral. Some rial denominated coins have a numeral over the Arabic letter r, . History The rial was issued by the Ottoman rulers of Tunis. Although known as the piastre by Europeans, it was not equal to the Turkish kuru , also known as the piastre. From 1855, the rial was on a bimetallic standard of 1 rial 0.17716 grams pure gold or 2.7873 grams pure silver. In 1887, the gold content of the 25 rial coin was slightly reduced to make it equivalent to 15 French franc s. In 1891, this conversion rate more conveniently expressed as 1 rial 60 centimes was used when the Tunisian franc replaced the rial. Coins In the early 19th century, copper 1 fals coins were issued, together with billon 1 nasri, 1, 2, 4 and 8 kharub, 1 and 2 rial, and gold sultani . A new coinage was introduced in 1847, consisting of copper 1 fals, 1 nasri, and 1 kharub and silver 2 and 5 rial denominations. Between 1856 and 1858, copper coins for 3, 6 and 13 nasri were issued along with silver 2, 4 and 8 kharub, 1, 3 and 4 rial, and gold 10, 20, 25, 40, 50, 80 and 100 rial. The gold coins were initially struck in pure gold, later reduced to .900 fineness, with the 20, 40 and 80 rial denominations short lived. The 6 and 13 nasri coins were later overstamped with the Arabic numerals 1 and 2 and to indicate that they were to circulate as 1 and 2 kharub coins, an increase in value of nasri for the 6 nasri coin. In 1864, a new copper coinage was introduced in denominations of , , 1, 2, 4, 8 kharub. Silver 8 kharub and gold 5 rial were also introduced. The piastra was the distinct currency of the Kingdom of Sicily until 1815. In order to distinguish it from the piastra issued on the mainland Kingdom of Sicily also known as the Kingdom of Naples , it is referred to as the Sicilian piastra as opposed to the Neapolitan piastra . These two piastra were equal but were subdivided differently. The Sicilian piastra was subdivided into 12 tari , each of 20 grana or 120 piccoli . The oncia was worth 30 tari 2 piastra . In 1815, a single piastra currency was introduced for the Two Sicilies , see Two Sicilies piastra . Coins In the late 18th century, coins were circulating in denominations of 3 piccoli, 1, 2, 10 and 20 grana, 2, 3, 4 and 6 tari, 1 piastra and 1 oncia. These were struck in copper up to the 2 grana, with the higher denominations in silver. In 1801, copper 5 and 10 grana were introduced, followed by a gold 2 oncia in 1814. Following the adoption of the unified currency for the two Sicilies, copper coins were issued in 1835 and 1836 bearing the name Siciliana , in denominations of , 1, 2, 5 and 10 grana. It is unclear whether these coins were denominated in Two Sicilies grana or the old Sicilian grana worth half as much . Riveli From a Riveli in 1607 Catania, also a Riveli in 1811 Avola, the Sicilian money system can be readily extracted. It was 1 onze 30 Tari, 1 Taro 20 Grani, 1 Grano 6 piccioli. On both of these historic documents, the denomination Piastra was not used. A Sicilian coin commonly available for sale today is the 120 Grana silver piece, weighing an ounce. It is called, in the supplementary description of this silver piece, one piastre. However in 1823 George Crabb, in Universal technoligical dictionary.... Volume 2, in addition to supporting the above relative values of Onzio, Tari and Grani in accounting, lists 120 Grani as equivalent to one Florino. Crabb also lists the Ponto, the Carlino, the Ducat and the Scudo or Crown and their equivalence to the Grano, however no mention of the Piastre. Auth ... more details
