It was founded in 1961 by Marion Stein Marion, Countess of Harewood and Fanny Waterman , who is today its Chairman and Artistic Director. The competition was first held in 1963 there was a four year gap before the 2000 competition . It takes place in the Great Hall of the University of Leeds and in Leeds Town Hall . The 16th competition took place 26 August 13 September 2009. It was the first time that the competition has not housed competitors at Tetley Hall , a residence hall at the University of Leeds which closed in 2006. For many years, the supervisor of Tetley Hall during the competition was Mrs. Elizabeth Arnold singer Elizabeth Arnold . The competitors are accompanied by the Halle Orchestra .     Thomas Haigh 1769 1808 , was a violinist, pianist, and composer. Haigh was born in London in 1769, and studied composition under Haydn in 1791 and 1792. Haigh s numerous compositions include sonatas for pianoforte solo and for pianoforte and violin or flute, serenatas, capriccios, and arrangements. Some of them were reprinted at Paris and others at Offenbach dn . The better known of them are Two sets of three sonatas, each for pianoforte, dedicated to Haydn, 1796 ? three sonatas for pianoforte, with accompaniment for violin or flute, London, 1798 ? three sonatas for pianoforte, airs by Giardini introduced, Op. 13, 1800 ? sonata for pianoforte, with air from Beggar s Opera introduced, Op. 28, 1800 ? sonata, with air Viva tutte, accompaniment flute or violin, 1812 ? sonata, pianoforte, dedicated to Miss Bain, 1817 ? grand sonata, dedicated to Miss Heathcote, 1819 Yesterday, Whan you told us, and other ballads, about 1800.   1. John Freckleton Burrowes

    John Freckleton Burrowes 23 April 1787 31 March 1852 was an English organist and composer. Biography He was born in London. His master was William Horsley. His first published work was a set of six English ballads, Printed for the author, 5 Great Suffolk Street, Charing Cross in 1812 he published an overture op. 8 which had been performed at the vocal concerts at Hanover Square . This was followed in 1817 by a similar work op. 13 produced by the Philharmonic Society , of which Burrowes was one of the original members. In 1818 the first edition of his Pianoforte Primer appeared, a little work which was very successful, and is still in use as an instruction book. In 1819, Burrowes brought out a Thorough Bass Primer , which achieved a success equal to that of the earlier work. In the course of his long career he also published a Companion to the Pianoforte Primer 1826 , a Companion to the Thorough Bass Primer 1832 , The Tutor s Assistant for the Pianoforte 1834 , and a Guide to Practice on the Pianoforte 1841 . He also published collections of psalm tunes, prelude s, dances, Scotch and Irish airs, sonata s, a trio for three flutes, songs, and many arrangements of operas, &c., for the pianoforte. For nearly forty years, Burrowes was organist of St. James s Church, Piccadilly . About 1834 he settled at 13 Nottingham Place, where he died, after a long and painful illness on 31 March 1852. Mo r studied in Prague , Vienna , and Budapest . Between 1885 and 1897 he toured Europe as a soloist and ventured as far afield as the United States . Besides five opera s and eight symphony symphonies his output also included concerto s for piano 4 , violin 4 , cello 2 , viola , and harp a triple concerto for violin, cello, and piano chamber music a requiem and numerous lied er. Essex was born in or about 1765 at Coventry, Warwickshire , was the son of Timothy Essex of that town. He commenced playing on the flute and violin at thirteen years of age for his own amusement, but the rapid progress which he made induced his father to let him study music as a profession. In 1786 he established himself as a teacher of the pianoforte, organ, and flute. In order to better his position he matriculated at Oxford as a member of Magdalen Hall 10 December 1806, and took the degree of bachelor of music on the following 17 December. He proceeded doctor of music 2 December 1812 ref Foster, Alumni Oxon. Oxford Graduates, 1851, p. 215 ref . Essex was an able teacher, and obtained some popularity as a composer. His Musical Academy was at 38 Hill Street, Berkeley Square he was also organist, composer to, and director of the choir of St. George s Chapel, Albemarle Street. Among his best works are 1. Eight English Canzonetts for a Single Voice 1800 . 2. A Grand Military Sonata for the Pianoforte, with an accompaniment ad libitum for a violin 1800 . 3. Six Duets for Flutes or Violins 1801? . 4. Eight Lessons and Four Sonatinas on a Peculiar Plan, intended to establish a proper method of fingering on the pianoforte 1802 . 5. Six Canzonets, the words from the poems of the late Mrs. Robinson 1804 . 6. Introduction and Fugue for the Organ 1812 . 7. Harmonia Sacra. being a collection of sacred melodies for the 150 Psalms of David 1830? . He also published a set of slow and quick marches for the pianoforte, with the full scores added for a military band, a variety of rondos for the pianoforte, and pianoforte and flute, and many single songs.
