Peninsular Spanish , also known as European Spanish , are the varieties of Spanish language spoken in the Iberian Peninsula , as opposed to the Spanish spoken in the Philippines , Africa and the Americas , known as Spanish Language in the Philippines Philippine Spanish , African Spanish and Spanish language in the Americas American Spanish respectively. In general, the main characteristic of Peninsular Spanish is distinci n , the distinction between the pronunciation of the soft c c e, c i and the z , which is always pronounced the same as a soft c in any Spanish dialect , and the s . While in South American Spanish both are pronounced as the English s , in peninsular Spanish the soft c is pronounced as the phoneme , that is, the initial sound of the English word think . However, this characteristic is far from uniform in all dialect ical variations of the Spanish of the Iberian Peninsula. The Andalusian dialect and the Spanish spoken in the Canary Islands do not use distinci n as a general rule, but rather use either seseo or ceceo . unreferenced date March 2007 The Catlins Ranges are a series of rugged, roughly parallel hill ranges in the southeastern corner of New Zealand s South Island . They take their name from the name given to this part of the country the Catlins . The ranges lie mostly in Otago , although their western extremes lie in Southland, New Zealand Southland Region. There are four distinct ranges the small Rata and Beresford Ranges in the northeast, the Maclennan Range in the southwest, and the Forest Range, which can be considered as an extension of the Maclennan Range. Each of these ranges is oriented along a northwest southeast axis. The ranges are separated by the valleys of the Catlins River Catlins and Tahakopa River s. Inland, close to the water divide watershed s of these rivers, the boundaries between the ranges become indistinct, part of the reason why they are often grouped together under the one name. The Maclennan Range is the largest of the ranges in terms of length, being some 25  km 15  mi in length, but most of the highest hills are found inland in the area where the ranges are not easily differentiated. The highest point in the Catlins Ranges is the 720  m 2361  ft summit of Mount Pye, New Zealand Mt. Pye , which is located 25  km 40  mi north northeast of Waikawa, Southland Waikawa .
