lunar crater data latitude 45.2 N or S N longitude 113.3 E or W W diameter 88 km depth Unknown colong 115 eponym Alfred Wegener Alfred L. Wegener Wegener is a Moon lunar impact crater that is located in the Moon s northern hemisphere, about midway between the equator and the north pole. It lies on the Far side Moon far side from the Earth , behind the northwestern limb. The southwestern rim of Wegener iintrudes slightly into the much larger walled plain Landau crater Landau . Attached to the eastern rim is the crater Stefan crater Stefan . This crater is in an intermediate stage of impact erosion, with a worn rim and some craters overlapping the edge and inner wall. The rim is generally more eroded in the northern half. A small crater lies across the western inner wall and part of the interior floor. There is a small, cup shaped craterlet just to the east of this feature. The inner wall is wider in the southern half, leaving some irregularities on the southern half of the floor. The remainder of the interior is a nearly level and featureless plain. Satellite craters By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid point that is closest to Wegener. class wikitable width 25 style background eeeeee Wegener width 25 style background eeeeee Latitude width 25 style background eeeeee Longitude width 25 style background eeeeee Diameter align center K align center 43.3 N align center 111.9 W align center 32 km align center W align center 47.5 N align center 116.1 W align center 54 km References Lunar crater references Category Impact craters on the Moon Moon crater stub de Wegener Mondkrater ... more details

The institute was founded in 1980 and is named after revolutionary meteorologist climatologist , and geologist Alfred Wegener . The Alfred Wegener Institute is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres . Structure of the institute The institute has four major departments Climate System Department, which studies ocean s, ice and Earth s atmosphere atmosphere as physical and chemical systems. Pelagic Ecosystems Department, which studies the ecology of plankton with regard to sea ice and sea shelf systems. Benthic Ecosystems Department, which studies the biology of ocean floors at a variety of depths. Geosystems Department, which studies climate development, especially as revealed by sediments. Research facilities Besides its main site in Bremerhaven, the institute has research stations in Potsdam, Helgoland, Sylt, the Arctic and Antarctic , and a research vessel, the PFS Polarstern PFS Polarstern . Polar 3 On 24 February 1985, the Polar 3 , a research airplane of the institute of the type Dornier 228 , was shot down by guerrillas of the Polisario Front over West Sahara .
