  1. Aalesund ship

Orphan date August 2008 The Aalesund ship is an ancient vessel which was discovered embedded in the earth south of Aalesund, Norway in 1920. It is considered of a much earlier construction than either the Oseberg ship or the Gokstad ship , both of which date to the ninth century. The Aalesund ship dates to the fourth century and was built during the iron age . Both the ship and a boat were discovered in the moorlands, with their pieces arranged in a peculiar manner. They had been cut prior to embedding with sections laid out in a long row from north to south. The oars had been placed straight down and were found protruding deep in the mud. The fragments of the ship were in disarray in a trench, yet seemingly arranged with some purpose conceived. An oak rudder is well preserved and fastened beneath the middle of the ship. Six oars were recovered, two of which are fully intact, measuring 3.2 meters each. The Aalesund ship is shorter than the Oseberg ship, measuring only about twelve meters in length. Several huge stones were found in the ship s interior, leading to the conjecture that a person had been buried with the ship. Archaeologists contended that there was no validity to the idea that the ship belonged to the ancient royal chieftain Egill Skallagrimson from Sogn . ref New Viking Ship , New York Times , August 22, 1920, pg. Image Funeral of russian noble by Siemiradzki.jpg thumb 250px Ship burial of Igor of Kiev Igor the Old in 945 , depicted by Henryk Siemiradzki 1843 1902 . A ship burial or boat grave is a burial in which a ship or boat is used either as a container for the dead and the grave goods, or as a part of the grave goods itself. If the ship is very small, it is called a boat grave. This style of burial was used in the Vendel era and by the Anglo Saxons , the Merovingian s, the Vikings , the Rus people Rus , the Balts especially the Curonians , and occasionally the Ancient Egypt ians. 1. Ladby ship

Image Ladbyskibet.jpg thumb 300px The Ladby ship Refimprove date June 2010 The Ladby ship is a major ship burial , of the type also represented by the boat chamber grave of Hedeby and the ship burials of Oseberg ship Oseberg , Borre mound cemetery Borre , Gokstad ship Gokstad and Tune ship Tune in South Norway , all of which date back to the 9th and 10th centuries. It is the only ship burial discovered in Denmark. It was discovered southwest of Kerteminde on the island of Funen . The grave is situated within an ordinary burial site, from the Viking Age. Excavations revealed an abundance of grave goods consisting both of objects and of animals. It was previously dated to the early 10th century, based on a gilded link of bronze for a dog harness, decorated in Jelling style, that was found there. The grave had been extensively disturbed and, since only a few small human bones were found, this has been interpreted to be a translation , i.e. removal from a heathen to a Christian grave. Another more likely interpretation is that the struggle for dominance by King Harald I of Denmark Haraldr Bl t nn and his heir, Sweyn Forkbeard Sveinn Tj guskegg , may have led to the grave being desecrated. It was, after all, a symbol of power very visible to all who travelled or lived in the area, glorifying the minor king buried there. By removing the deceased and chopping all his grave goods into hundreds of pieces within a few years of the burial, the attackers presumably gave his heirs a great blow to their family prestige. In 1814 the ship illegally departed Hobart with thirteen or fourteen convicts on board. It was postulated that this was done with the agreement of the master of the ship, John Poor Dixon.
