Coins from his reign are known, but other than the report in the Roger of Wendover s Flores Historiarum of his death fighting pagans i.e. Vikings , nothing more is recorded of him. Roger of Wendover dates this reign to 844, but his dates are known to be unreliable. The recent discovery of a coin of King Eanred, dated on stylistic grounds to circa 850, led to a reappraisal of the reigns of Northumbrian rulers in the 9th century. As a result, R dwulf s reign is now thought to have been circa 858 rather than 844. The numismatic and written evidence agrees that thelred was restored to the kingship after R dwulf s death. Osbald was a violent man and most likely a murderer as modern records suggest. Ealdred was the son of Eadwulf of Bernicia Eadwulf . He was a ruler or nobleman in Northumbria in the early tenth century. Ealdred s father, called king of the Saxons of the North by the Annals of Ulster , but only Reeve England reeve of Bamburgh by the chronicler thelweard historian , died in 913. He may have been ruler of Northumbria following Eowils and Halfdan who were killed at Tettenhall circa 910. It is unknown whether the family had links to pre or post Viking kings of Northumbria . The Historia de Sancto Cuthberto states that Ealdred was a friend of King Edward the Elder , as his father had been a favourite of King Alfred the Great . Ealdred was driven from his lands, whether all of Northumbria or merely the northern part which had once been Bernicia is debated, by Ragnall ua mair , either in or before 914, or alternatively as late as 918. The Historia states that Ealdred sought refuge with Constant n mac eda , the king of Alba , and that the two fought Ragnall at the battle of Corbridge , dated by the Annals of Ulster and the Chronicle of the Kings of Alba to 918. The battle appears to have been indecisive and Ragnall remained the master of at least southern Northumbria, former Deira , or perhaps of all. In 920 the sons of Eadwulf were among those who met with Edward the Elder and, in the words of the Anglo Saxon Chronicle , chose him as father and lord . Ealdred is named as one of those present at Eamont Bridge on 12 July 927 when Edward s son thelstan met with the northern British kings. While Ealdred is nowhere certainly recorded after 927, it may be that the Annals of Clonmacnoise report his death as Adulf mcEtulfe, king of the North Saxons circa 934, although this may be another of Eadwulf s sons. He ruled over Northumbria when it was at the height of its power, but his reign ended with a disastrous defeat in which he lost his life. Early life Ecgfrith was the son of his predecessor as king, Oswiu of Northumbria . Bede tells us, in his Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum , that Ecgfrith was held as a hostage at the court of Queen Cynwise in the province of the Mercia ns at the time of Penda of Mercia s invasion of Northumbria in 654 or 655. Penda was, however, defeated and killed by the Northumbrians under Oswiu in the Battle of Winwaed , a victory which greatly enhanced Northumbrian power. King Ecgfrith was made king of Deira kingdom Deira , a sub kingdom of Northumbria, in 664, and he became king of Northumbria following his father s death on February 15, 670. He had married thelthryth , the daughter of Anna of East Anglia , in 660 however, she took the veil shortly after Ecgfrith s accession, a step which possibly led to his long quarrel with Wilfrid, the Archbishop of York .
