It was written by John Stephen Roy Chisholm J.S.R.Chisholm , an English mathematical physicist , and published by Cambridge University Press .     In spaceflight , an orbital maneuver is the use of spacecraft propulsion propulsion systems to change the orbit of a spacecraft . For spacecraft far from Earth for example those in orbits around the Sun an orbital maneuver is called a deep space maneuver DSM . Impulsive maneuvers An Impulse function impulsive maneuver is one which involves a single, ideally instantaneous change in the spacecraft s velocity . Because even small spacecraft have mass, no truly instantaneous change in velocity is possible. But during the planning phase of most space missions, designers will first approximate their intended orbital changes using impulsive maneuvers. This greatly reduces the complexity of finding the correct orbital transitions. The instantaneous changes in velocity are referred to as delta v math Delta mathbf v , math , the total delta v for all maneuvers required in the mission is called a delta v budget . With a good approximation of the delta v budget designers can estimate the fuel to payload requirements of the spacecraft. Using these approximations is most useful when finite thrusts are to be executed in short bursts. Finite maneuvers like these are possible with high thrust to weight spacecraft propulsion propulsion systems , e.g. chemical rocket s. It differs from the conceptually similar Wankel engine by using a shaped rotor that rolls around the interior of the engine, rather than having a trilobular rotor that spins in place . Overview The theoretical advantage is that there is no high speed contact area with the engine walls, unlike in the Wankel engine Wankel where edge wear is a problem. However, the combustion chambers are divided by blades which do have contact with both the walls and the rotor, and are said to have been difficult to seal due to the perpendicular intersection with the moving impeller. The orbital engine was invented in 1972 by Ralph Sarich , an engineer from Perth, Western Australia Perth , Australia , who worked on the concept for years without ever producing a production engine. A prototype was demonstrated, running on the bench with no load.
