  1. Grand opening

Wikify date March 2009 Unreferenced date July 2007 File Inaugura o da m dia.jpg thumb Grand opening of a swimming pool, 1941 A Grand Opening is a term used when a business, public office, or private association wishes to announce the official opening of a new location. This differs from just opening the doors on the first day, in that a Grand Opening is more of a celebration event, not just the first day having the doors open for clients. Often the opening announcements are in this order Coming Soon, Now Open, and then Grand Opening. The first two of these announcements are meant to communicate to the targeted clients that there is an intent to serve them and the Grand Opening signifies a planned special event or ceremony . Often a party type atmosphere is promoted by use of food, music, prizes, balloons, giveaways, festive signs, searchlights lighting up the night sky, fireworks display , and so on. It is often suggested that an organization not have a Grand Opening the very first day it opens its doors unless that organization is already well established. Often an organization will have a soft opening first. In a soft opening, the establishment begins to operate with little promotion. This allows the organization to become more organized the first few weeks or months before the more publicized Grand Opening, and gives the management and staff a chance to become familiar with the daily operations of their inventory, accounting, and customer service requirements. Once the institution is organized and ready to receive more clients, it will then sponsor a Grand Opening event. Some will use hanging banners, colorful posters, bright signs, post card mailings, newspaper articles or radio and television ads to attract as much attention as possible to this celebration. 1. Opening statement

Unreferenced date December 2009 File Opening statement legalman mock trial Dec 23 08.jpg thumb 250px right A legalman making an opening statement for the prosecution to a jury during a mock trial . An opening statement is generally the first occasion that the trier of fact jury or judge has to hear from a lawyer in a trial law trial , aside possibly from questioning during voir dire . The opening statement is generally constructed to serve as a road map for the fact finder. This is especially essential, in many jury trials, since jurors at least theoretically know nothing at all about the case before the trial, or if they do, they are strictly instructed by the judge to put preconceived notions aside . Though such statements may be dramatic and vivid, they must be limited to the evidence reasonably expected to be presented during the trial. Attorneys generally conclude opening statements with a reminder that at the conclusion of evidence, the attorney will return to ask the fact finder to find in his or her client s favor. Opening statements are, in theory, not allowed to be argumentative , or suggest the inferences that fact finders should draw from the evidence they will hear. In actual practice, the line between statement and argument is often unclear and many attorneys will infuse at least a little argumentation into their opening often prefacing borderline arguments with some variation on the phrase, As we will show you... . Objection law Objections , though permissible during opening statements, are very unusual, and by professional courtesy are usually reserved only for egregious conduct. Generally, the prosecution in a criminal case and plaintiff in a Civil law common law civil case is the first to offer an opening statement, and defendants go second. Defendants are also allowed the option of delaying their opening statement until after the close of the prosecution ... to stand uncontradicted for so long. Ne2 Ne2 It is named after the Russia Russo Lithuania n player and openings analyst Semyon Alapin 1856&ndash 1923 . Although this opening is rarely used, Ljubomir Ljubojevic Ljubojevi as Black played against it at Groningen city Groningen in 1970. Alapin s Opening is offbeat, but perfectly playable for White. It is mainly used by players who want to avoid highly theoretical lines such as the Ruy Lopez , or those who wish to surprise their opponents. White is intending to play f2 f4 soon. Also, it s similar to the Smyslov Position Smyslov Botvinnik, 1958 if White tries to play something in the lines of g3, Nbc3, d3, Bg2. However, Alapin s Opening also incurs several problems for White. Firstly, the development of White s light squared bishop, and also of his queen, is blocked, and it will require another move of the knight or another pawn move, both of which go against opening principles, to develop these pieces. Secondly, the knight on e2, although flexible, has no control over Black s half of the centre, and will need to be moved again to become more useful. It is relatively easy for Black to equalize in this opening, e.g., 2...Nf6, 2...Nc6, and 2...d5 all equalize, although Black should be careful to avoid being caught by surprise by an eventual f2 f4.
