Mergeto Lithosphere Oceanic lithosphere date July 2009 Oceanic lithosphere Oceanic lithosphere is typically about 50 100  km thick but beneath the mid ocean ridges is no thicker than the crust , while the continental lithosphere has a range in thickness from about 40  km to perhaps 200  km the upper 30 to 50  km of the typical continental lithosphere is crust. The mantle part of the lithosphere consists largely of peridotite. The crust is distinguished from the upper mantle by the change in chemical composition that takes place at the Moho discontinuity. Oceanic lithosphere consists mainly of mafic crust and ultramafic mantle peridotite and is denser than the continental lithosphere, for which the mantle is associated with crust made of felsic rocks. Oceanic lithosphere thickens as it ages and moves away from the mid ocean ridge. This thickening occurs by conductive cooling, which converts hot asthenosphere into lithospheric mantle, and causes the oceanic lithosphere to become increasingly thick and dense with age. Oceanic lithosphere is less dense than asthenosphere for a few tens of millions of years, but after this becomes increasingly denser than the asthenosphere. The gravitational instability of mature oceanic lithosphere has the effect that, at subduction zones, the oceanic lithosphere invariably sinks underneath the overriding lithosphere, which can be oceanic or continental. New oceanic lithosphere is constantly being produced at mid ocean ridges and is recycled back to the mantle at subduction zones. As a result, oceanic lithosphere is much younger than continental lithosphere the oldest oceanic lithosphere is about 170 million years old, while parts of the continental lithosphere are billions of years old. Oceanic Australia, Polynesia , Melanesia , Micronesia literature developed in isolation from the rest of the world and in a unique geographic environment. This allowed the development of a unique literature to thrive. Oceanic literature was heavily inflenced by religion and ritual. This can be seen by the large amount of religious symbolism featured in it. Another major thing that influenced Oceanic society was its intricate oral tradition. For a long time, most Oceanic literature was not written down. As a result, stock formulas and rhyming were used in many works these traits made it easier to memorize . Gods, creation myths, and spirits are also prominent in Oceanic litearture, showcasing again the influence oral tradition had on the literature of Oceania. about the psychological term the album Oceanic Feeling album Oceanic feeling is a psychological term coined by Romain Rolland and popularized by Sigmund Freud in his books The Future of An Illusion and Civilization and Its Discontents to criticize the psychological feeling of religion, the oceanic feeling of limitlessness. According to Rolland s definition of the term, this feeling is the source of all religious energy which permeates in various religious systems. It is a sensation of an indissoluble bond, as of being connected with the external world in its integral form. ref Emotions in the Christian Tradition Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy http plato.stanford.edu entries emotion Christian tradition ref This feeling is entirely subjective fact and is not an article of faith. Rolland s view is that one may justifiably call oneself religious on the basis of this oceanic feeling alone, regardless if the adherent renounces every belief and every illusion. ref The Ontology of Religiosity The Oceanic Feeling and the Value of the Lived Experience ref On the other hand, Freud cannot sympathize with such feeling since he admits he cannot find it in himself. It is not easy, he says, to analyze emotions scientifically. To Freud, this feeling is a fragment of infantile consciousness when the infant begins to differentiate himself from his human and non human environment. In his opinion, there is not a strong enough need for it to be the source of all religious energy. Freud does not deny that this feeling occurs in people, but only questions whether it is correctly interpreted ref Freud, Sigmund.
