  1. Northern Ireland Law Commission

    The Northern Ireland Law Commission is a Law Commission in Northern Ireland that will be created under section 50 of the Justice Northern Ireland Act 2002 , implementing recommendations following the Good Friday Agreement . The Act has not yet been brought into force, but it is expected that the Northern Ireland Law Commission will be created in 2007. It will replace the exising non statutory Law Reform Advisory Committee . The Northern Ireland Law Commission will keep the Northern Irish law law of Northern Ireland under review, with a view to law reform . It will have five members, a part time chairman and four full time commissioners, appointed by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland . The chairman will be a judge of the High Court of Northern Ireland , who will retain judicial office while acting as chairman. The other commissioners will include a barrister , a solicitor , a legal academic, and a layperson. It was modelled on the Privy Council of the United Kingdom . The Council was created in 1922 as a result of the division of Ireland into the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland . The latter remained part of the United Kingdom albeit with its own Parliament of Northern Ireland parliament . The previous Privy Council of Ireland , however, was never formally abolished, remaining theoretically in existence though devoid of members other than the Lord Mayor of Dublin , who continued to be styled Right Honourable as a result. ref Though the Privy Council was de facto abolished in 1922, the Lord Mayor continued to be entitled to be addressed as the Right Honourable as a result of the Municipal Corporations Ireland Act 1840 , which granted the title in law. The Office of the Northern Ireland Ombudsman was established in 1969, but its current governing statutes are the Ombudsman Northern Ireland Order 1996 and the Commissioner for Complaints Northern Ireland Order 1996. His role is to deal with complaints of maladministration by government and public bodies in Northern Ireland . Unlike the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales , he has no role in investigating individual ethical conduct by councillors. The Ombudsman is appointed by the Queen.
