  1. 1666 census of New France

Talon and the France French Minister of the Marine Jean Baptiste Colbert had recently 1663 brought the colony of New France under direct royal control, and Colbert wished to make it the centre of the French colonial empire . Jean Talon conducted the census largely by himself, travelling door to door among the settlements of New France. He did not include Indigenous peoples of the Americas Native American inhabitants of the colony, or the religious orders such as the Jesuits or Recollets . 1. Slavery in New France

Slavery in New France was first recorded in 1628, when the first slave in New France was brought by a British Convoy to New France. 1. New France livre

The livre was the currency of New France , the France French colony in modern day Canada . It was subdivided into 20 French sol sols , each of 12 French denier deniers . History After an initial period during which barter prevailed, the French livre began to circulate. In order to encourage coins into the colony, those circulating in New France were valued at a premium, creating a monnoye de pays worth less than the French currency monnoye de France . The premium was set at one eighth in 1664, raised to one third in 1680. ref http www.bankofcanada.ca en dollar book dollar book.pdf A History of the Canadian Dollar ref The New France currency was distinguished by the extensive use of paper money . However, early issues did not maintain their value. In 1717, the premium for coins was abolished, the card money was redeemed at half its face value and the New France livre was set equal to the French livre. Further paper money was issued. In the 1750s, the backing of paper money by coins was suspended, causing the hoarding of coins. Following the British conquest of New France, the paper money lost its value and the livre was replaced by the Canadian pound pound .
