International Max Planck Research School for Neurosciences , also known as IMPRS for Neurosciences , is a 1.5 years MSc program or a 4 year PhD program with a possibility to have MD PhD MD PhD degree for those who have completed a medical school . The first year in both programs is the same and the students for both programs, or more exactly tracks, are studying in their first year together. Later it is possible to decide to do MSc or PhD. At the end of the first year there is an examination to determine who is suited for the PhD program. There are about 15 student s in the first year of the program. As G ttingen is regarded as one of the focal points in neurosciece research in Niedersachsen , and also the whole Germany , this international graduate school is providing various and diverse research opportunities in the fields of the neuroscience, biochemistry, structural biology and related disciplines. The pharyngeal reflex or gag reflex is a reflex contraction of the back of the throat, ref name urlMedical Neurosciences cite web url http www.neuroanatomy.wisc.edu virtualbrain BrainStem 09NA.html title Medical Neurosciences work accessdate ref evoked by touching the soft palate . ref pharyngeal reflex, gag reflex. u WordNet 1.7.1 u . Princeton University, 2001. Answers.com 22 Apr. 2008. http www.answers.com topic pharyngeal reflex gag reflex ref It prevents something from entering the throat except as part of normal swallowing and helps prevent choking . Different people have different sensitivities to the gag reflex. The afferent limb of the reflex is supplied by the glossopharyngeal nerve cranial nerve IX , which inputs to the nucleus solitarius and the spinal trigeminal nucleus , and the efferent nerve efferent limb is supplied by the one called vagus nerve cranial nerve X from the nucleus ambiguus . Absence of the gag reflex and pharyngeal sensation can be a symptom of a number of severe medical conditions, such as damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve , the vagus nerve , or brain death . However, in one study, one third of healthy people did not have a gag reflex, although pharyngeal sensation in these subjects remained intact. ref Pharyngeal sensation and gag reflex in healthy subjects. Davies, A., Kidd, D., Stone, S., MacMahon, J. 1995 . Lancet 345 487 488 ref Swallowing unusually large objects or placing objects in the back of the mouth, like a toothbrush, may cause the pharyngeal reflex. Some people, for instance sword swallower s, have learned how to suppress it. In contrast, triggering the reflex is sometimes done intentionally to induce vomiting, for example by those who suffer from bulimia nervosa . Research center caesar Center of Advanced European Study and Research was founded in 1995 as part of the compensatory actions under the Berlin Bonn law, which were intended to support structural change in the region of the former capital. The independent foundation operates under private law with foundation capital from the governments of Germany and the State of North Rhine Westphalia . caesar is closely associated with the Max Planck Society MPG . The President of the Max Planck Society chairs the Board of Trustees. The caesar directors are scientific members of the Max Planck Society. The appointment of the directors, the evaluations and the safeguarding of scientific excellence are realized according to the criteria of the Max Planck Society. The foundation operates a research center, which does research in the field of neurosciences with modern photonic, molecular biological and chemical methods as well as methods of microtechnology. Here, particularly optical methods are utilized for brain research and brain control. At the moment, caesar is being reorganized thematically. The focus is put on research regarding sensory processes, molecular causes for neurodegenerative diseases and the use of microscopic and spectroscopic methods in neurosciences neurophotonics in order to identify the operating principles of neural networks and to obtain soft control.
