It spans the period of time from Ma 2800 2500 &mdash the period being defined chronometrically and not referenced to a specific level in a rock section on Earth . Oxygenic photosynthesis first evolved in this era and was accountable for the oxygen catastrophe which was to happen later in the paleoproterozoic from a poisonous buildup of oxygen in the atmosphere, produced by these oxygen producing photoautotrophs, which evolved earlier in the Neoarchean. The supercontinent Kenorland formed during this period, about 2.7 billion years ago. The Iceland Lake Pluton , formerly known as the Ingall Lake Batholith , is a large granite granitic intrusion in Briggs Township, Ontario Briggs and Strathcona Township, Ontario Strathcona townships of Temagami , Northeastern Ontario , Canada . It is one the three separate granitoid intrusions that constitute the Temagami greenstone belt , consisting of rocks ranging from diorite to quartz monzonite . The age of the intrusion is estimated to be about 2,736  billion years old, as well as an adjacent rhyolite rhyolitic lava flow using the uranium lead dating technique. This suggests that the Iceland Lake Pluton might be the remnants of a magma chamber of a volcano that erupted felsic magma . The pluton is overlain by sediment s of the younger Huronian Supergroup .
