An aster is a cellbiology cellular structure shaped like a star symbol star , formed around each centrosome during mitosis in an animal cell. ref Campell Biology , p.221 ref Astral rays, composed of microtubules , radiate from the centrosphere and look like a cloud. During mitosis, there are four stages of cell division Prophase , Metaphase , Anaphase , and Telophase . During prophase, two aster covered centrosomes migrate to opposite sides of the Cell nucleus nucleus in preparation of mitotic spindle formation. During metaphase, the astral rays connect to the lined up chromosomes at their centromere . Afterwards, during anaphase, the astral rays pull the chromosomes apart into its individual chromatids and pull them towards the centrosomes, located at opposite ends of the cell. This allows the cell to divide properly with each daughter cell containing full replicas of chromosomes. In some cells, the positions of the asters also determine the site of cell division. They are the sites of photosystem I . Simply put, lamellae may be considered as a pair of membranes containing chlorophyll . Chloroplasts are characterized by a system of membranes embedded in a hydrophobic proteinaceous matrix, or stroma. The basic unit of the membrane system is a flattened single vesicle called the thylakoid thylakoids stack into grana sing, granum . All the thylakoids of a granum are connected with each other, and the grana are connected by intergranal lamellae . Oxford dictionary of Biochemistry and molecular biology, Oxford University press It is placed between the two primary cell walls of two plant cells and made up of intracellular matrix. The lamella comprises a mixture of polygalacturons D galacturonic acid and neutral carbohydrates. It is soluble in the pectinase enzyme. Unreferenced date December 2009 Otheruses tether Biological cellbiologycell s which form Cell adhesion bonds with a substrate and are at the same time subject to a flow can form long thin membrane cylinders called tethers , which connect the adherent area to the main body of the cell. Under physiological conditions, neutrophil tethers can extend to several micrometers. In biochemistry, a tether is a molecule that carries 1 or 2 carbon intermediates from one active site to another. They are commonly used in lipid synthesis, gluconeogenesis, conversion of pyruvate into Acetyl CoA via PDH complex. Common tethers are lipoate lysine residue complex associated with dihydrolipoyl transacetylase, which is used for carrying hydroxyethyl from hydroxyethyl TPP. This compound forms Acetyl CoA, a convergent molecule in metabolic pathways. Another tether is biotin lysine residue complex associated with pyruvate carboxylase, an enzyme which plays an importqnt role in gluconeogenesis. It is involved in the production of oxaloacetate from pyruvate. One of the biological ethers used in the synthesis of fats is a mercaptoethylamine pantothenate complex associated with an acyl carrier protein. The Biology of the Cell Surface is a 1939 book by the U.S. biologist Ernest Everett Just that examines the role of the cell surface in embryology . The book, published by the Philadelphia based P. Blakiston s Son & Co. Inc., details how the surface of the egg plays an active role within cell development. The book was notable for successfully challenging scientific theories that the cell nucleus was the sole structure responsible for the development of hereditary traits, with the cell surface merely acting as an encasement. ref Cite book url http books.google.com books?id a9ju9E2iah4C&pg PA253&dq 22The Biology of the Cell Surface 22&ei BWseS7XTF4 UygT5yLjHCg&cd 2 v onepage&q 22The 20Biology 20of 20the 20Cell 20Surface 22&f false title Black Apollo of Science The Life of Ernest Everett Just author Kenneth R. The granules of certain cells, such as natural killer cell s, contain components which can lead to the lysis of neighboring cells. The process of immunological B cell B cell maturation involves transformation from an undifferentiated B cell to one that secretes antibodies with particular specificity ref Nossal, G. J. V. & Lederberg, J. 1958. Antibody production by single cells. Nature 181 1419 1420 ref . This differentiation and activation of the B cell occurs most rapidly after exposure to antigen by antigen presenting cell s in the reticuloendothelial system reticuloendothelial system, and under modulation by T cell s, and is closely intertwined with affinity maturation . B cell s that respond most avidly to antigen are preferentially allowed to proliferate and mature, a process known as clonal selection . In lymphocyte lymphocytic neoplasm neoplastic diseases such as multiple myeloma and lymphoma , but also other illnesses, there can be a massive expansion of a single B cell clone, detectable by measuring the excessively produced antibodies, measured in a serum protein electrophoresis test or peripheral blood flow cytometry . Such an expansion is said to be monoclonal , and monoclonal antibodies produced by such a group of B cells can cause illnesses such as amyloidosis and systemic lupus erythematosus lupus , or can be indicative of an underlying malignancy . The concept of clonality is closely associated with cancer malignancy , for example in diagnosing lymphomatoid skin lesions. ref cite journal author Knowles D, Halper J, Jakobiec F title The immunologic characterization of 40 extranodal lymphoid infiltrates usefulness in distinguishing between benign pseudolymphoma and malignant lymphoma journal Cancer volume 49 issue 11 pages 2321 35 year 1982 pmid 6804083 doi 10.1002 1097 0142 19820601 49 11 2321 AID CNCR2820491120 3.0.CO 2 C ref The expansion of a particular clone of immune B cell s is usually interpreted by clinicians as evidence of unrestricted cell growth, the hallmark of cancer . Expert subject Molecular and Cellular Biology date November 2008 Refimprove date April 2008 In cellbiology , a bleb is an irregular bulge in the plasma membrane of a cell caused by localized decoupling of the cytoskeleton from the plasma membrane ref cite journal author Fackler OT, Grosse R title Cell motility through plasma membrane blebbing journal J Cell Biol. volume 181 issue 6 pages 879 84 year 2008 month Jun pmid 18541702 doi 10.1083 jcb.200802081 pmc 2426937 ref . Blebbing is the term used to describe the formation of blebs and is sometimes referred to as zeiosis . Image Apoptosis.png thumb right 200px The process of apoptosis, with blebbing shown in the middle illustration Physiological Functions During apoptosis programmed cell death , the cell s cytoskeleton breaks up and causes the membrane to bulge outward ref cite journal author Vermeulen K, Van Bockstaele DR, Berneman ZN title Apoptosis mechanisms and relevance in cancer journal Ann Hematol. volume 84 issue 10 pages 627 39 year 2005 month Oct pmid 16041532 doi 10.1007 s00277 005 1065 x ref . These bulges may separate from the cell, taking a portion of cytoplasm with them, to become known as apoptotic bodies . Phagocytic cells eventually consume these fragments and the components are recycled see figure . Blebbing also has important functions in other cellular processes, including cell locomotion, cell division, and physical ...
