The group, which was based in Tucson, Arizona but had many state branches, remained active until 1988. APRO stressed scientific field investigations, and had a large staff of consulting Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. scientists. A notable example was Dr. James E. McDonald of the University of Arizona, a well known atmospheric physicist, and perhaps the leading scientific UFO researcher of his time. Another was Dr. James Harder of the University of California, Berkeley , a civil and hydraulic engineering professor, who acted as director of research from 1969 1982. McDonald and Harder were among six scientists who testified about UFOs before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and Astronautics in 1968, when they were conducting hearings on the subject. The AerialPhenomena Enquiry Network usually shortened to APEN is an unknown group of investigators that specialise in the field of UFO s who regularly contact researchers via letter and cassette tape offering pieces of information, yet never supply contact details. They were first encountered in 1974 when British UFO researcher Jenny Randles received a one hour length audio cassette tape through the post. Contained on the tape was an introduction from a male United States American voice claiming to be someone called J.T. Anderson, Supreme Commander of APEN . The tape contained television and radio broadcasts of UFO reports, occasionally interrupted by other voices, terrified and in panic, claiming that UFOs were hostile and the listener should be wary of their nature and intentions. Notably, they are known for their involvement in bringing the Berwyn Mountain UFO incident in Wales to UFOlogists attention when only the British government was aware of it at the time. They have been linked with the Men in Black phenomenon. Communication Between December 1974 and April 1975 UFO researchers around the United Kingdom received letters through the post from APEN, sometimes containing cassette tapes. The letters were a mixture of advice, information and references to APEN s organisational structure.
