The National Ag Safety Database NASD was developed with funding from the United States National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health NIOSH , the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , and the USDA Cooperative Extension Service CES . The information contained in NASD was contributed by safety professionals and organizations from across the United States . Specifically, the objectives of the NASD project are 1 to provide a national resource for the dissemination of information 2 to educate workers and managers about occupational hazards associated with agriculture related injuries, deaths and illnesses 3 to provide prevention information 4 to promote the consideration of safety and health issues in agricultural operations and 5 to provide a convenient way for members of the agricultural safety and health community to share educational and research materials with their colleagues. In October 1993, NIOSH provided funding through its Agricultural Health Promotion System AHPS grant program to develop the first NASD. The database was developed at the University of Florida s Cooperative Extension Service. In October 1996, NIOSH funded a three year program to update the database and convert the database into HTML format for delivery on the World Wide Web. It commemorates the day in 1953 when James D. Watson James Watson and Francis Crick s article on the structure of DNA was published, and the day in 2003 when the the Human Genome Project was completed, both of which were on April 25. In the United States , DNA Day was first celebrated on April 25 2003 by proclamation of both the United States Senate Senate and the United States House of Representatives House of Representatives . However, they only declared a one time celebration, not an annual holiday. Subsequent annual DNA Day celebrations have been organized by the National Human Genome Research Institute NHGRI . In recent years, the NHGRI has been changing the dates of DNA Day. In 2010, they declared it would be on April 23, and in 2011 it will be celebrated on April 15. DNADNA hybridization generally refers to a molecular biology technique that measures the degree of genetic similarity between pools of DNA sequences. It is usually used to determine the genetic distance between two species . When several species are compared that way, the similarity values allow the species to be arranged in a phylogenetic tree it is therefore one possible approach to carrying out molecular systematics . Charles Sibley and Jon Ahlquist , pioneers of the technique, used DNADNA hybridization to examine the phylogenetic relationships of avians the Sibley Ahlquist taxonomy and primates. ref http evolution.berkeley.edu evolibrary article 0 history 26 Genetic Similarities Wilson, Sarich, Sibley, and Ahlquist ref ref cite journal title The Phylogeny of the Hominoid Primates, as Indicated by DNADNA Hybridization author C.G. A DNA virus is a virus that has DNA as its genetic material and replicates using a DNA dependent DNA polymerase . The nucleic acid is usually double stranded DNA dsDNA but may also be single stranded DNA ssDNA . DNA viruses belong to either Group I or Group II of the Baltimore classification system for viruses. Single stranded DNA is usually expanded to double stranded in infected cells. Although Group VII viruses such as hepatitis B contain a DNA genome, they are not considered DNA viruses according to the Baltimore classification, but rather reverse transcribing viruses because they replicate through an RNA intermediate.
