The Department of Statistics for Georgia is a governmental body in charge of nationalstatistics and responsible for carrying out a census once in every four years in Georgia country . History The earliest references to the collection of statistics in Georgia date from the thirteenth century. Materials from population censuses made in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in various regions of the country have survived to the present day. On November 15, 1918 a temporary Statistical Bureau was formed within the Ministry of Agriculture. The bureau s functions included development of materials for agricultural census, accounting of the available land and determining of norms for its distribution. On the basis of law enacted by the Constitution Assembly on July 25, 1919, a Republican Statistical Committee was formed within the same ministry. The committee was assigned to manage all types of statistical works of national importance. Background Itss antecedents lie in the initiatives of President of Chile President Manuel Bulnes and his minister, Manuel Rengifo, to draw up the second population census and obtain statistical data of the country. By Decree No. 18 of March 27, 1843, the Office of Statistics was created, Ministry of the Interior Chile Ministry of Interior to provide knowledge of the departments and provinces. It put the INE in charge of producing the national population census every 10 years, as required by the Census Act of July 12, 1843. Law No. 187 of September 17, 1847 established the office as a permanent body of the state. By 1853, it was legally required that each section chief of the ministries collect and submit data to the Bureau of Statistics. Subsequently and by various legal modifications, it was called Direcci n General de Estad sticas 1927 1953 , Servicio Nacional de Estad sticas y Censos 1953 1960 , Direcci n de Estad sticas y Censos 1960 1970 .
