The Imperial MunitionsBoard IMB was a national agency, set up in Canada under the chairmanship of Joseph Wesley Flavelle by the British War Cabinet to alleviate the Shell Crisis of 1915 during the First World War . The Board was mandated to sign contracts on behalf of the British government for the manufacture of war materials in Canada. It established state owned factories to produce munitions and materials that could not be produced by the private sector including railroad workshops and small factories to produce heavy artillery shells for the Western Front World War I Western Front . The Board also oversaw the production of ships and aircraft. The IMB was dissolved in 1919. Insensitive munitions are munitions that are Chemical stability chemically stable enough to withstand mechanical shocks, fire and impact by shrapnel, but that are still able to explode as intended in order to destroy their targets. Description Insensitive munitions IM will only burn rather than explode when subjected to fast or slow heating, bullet s, Fragmentation weaponry shrapnel , shaped charge s or the detonation of another nearby munition. The term refers to warhead s, bomb s, rocket motor s, although different countries armed forces may have their own definitions. Three approaches are taken when designing insensitive munitions Firstly, the high energy device can be protected and transported with an external protection of some kind. Some munition shipping containers are designed to provide a degree of protection and thermal insulation . Secondly, the chemistry of the high energy fill is chosen to provide a higher degree of stability, for example by using plastic explosive plastic bonded explosives . Lastly, the casings of high energy devices can be designed in such a way as to allow venting or some other form of relief valve pressure relief in a fire. Insensitive high explosives Insensitive munitions are almost always filled with fire resistant, shock resistant insensitive Explosive material high explosives IHE such as TATB or various insensitive explosive mixtures or Polymer bonded explosive polymer or plastic bonded explosives . TATB particularly will not detonate if impacted by typical fragments or burned in a fire. Another, experimental, IHE is FOX 7 . IHEs often combine amino group s and nitro group s in the same molecule. refimprove date January 2011 Atomic demolition munitions ADMs , colloquially known as nuclear land mines, are small nuclear explosive device s. ADMs were developed for both military and civilian purposes. As weapons, they were designed to be exploded in the forward battle area, in order to block or channel enemy forces. Non militarily, they were designed for demolition, mining or earthmoving. However, apart from testing, they have never been used for either purpose. Military uses Instead of being delivered to the target by missiles, rockets, or artillery shells, ADMs were intended to be emplaced by soldiers. Because of their relatively small size and light weight, ADMs could be emplaced by military engineers or Special Forces teams, then detonated on command or by timer to create massive obstructions. By destroying key terrain features or choke points such as bridges, dams, mountain passes, and tunnels, ADMs could block the movement of enemy forces or channel them into pre planned killing zones. ref Field Manual 5 106, Employment of Atomic Demolition Munitions Washington Department of the Army, July 1984 Unclassified . ref According to official accounts, the United States deployed ADMs overseas in Italy and West Germany during the Cold War . ref Kenneth W.
