In its prime from the late 19th century until World War II , it was one of the most popular varieties of melon on the east coast of North America . The fruit was large larger than any other melon cultivated on the continent at the time , round, netted like a muskmelon , flattened at the ends, deeply ribbed, with a thin rind. Another pro basketball team started in its place for the 2008 2009 season, known as the Montreal Sasquatch of the Premier Basketball League. Unfortunately that team after undergoing ownership problems and playing only a handful of games is now defunct as well, so there are currently no professional basketball teams in Montreal.
